I had Phil (Reefer) visiting this week and we took advantage of the good weather to nab a couple of blacks out of Mooloolaba. Our 5 am start did not pay off for the spaniards who were not playing the game, by the time we gave up on that and went chasing spotties, with the other 30 boats, the bite was about over for the morning. We picked up some livies on the 8 mile but as the bait was looking pretty scratchy went for a troll, after about an hour we came across a nice show of bait that looked like it was being harrassed by preditors.
My yacca was not down there very long when I felt a slow pull on the line, I fed it a bit then thumbed down on the spool waiting for it to tighten, nothing. I fed it a bit more, still it did nothing, a slow wind picked up some weight and a lively black jumped really close to the boat. We soon had him tagged and released.
We plugged away at the same bait shoal , drifting through it then slow trolling back, for a couple of hours before Phil was attached to a far better specimen which gave us a bit of a run around. I somehow manage to drive the boat and take some photos but dropped the camera in the process, looks terminal!
