Schoolie - my opinion and a nice one at that.

It just goes to show what little chance the average punter has when a group of pretty serious fishos can't get a consensus on a ID.

I'm no expert on mac ID, but if it's over 60cm it's in the box, unless it's a Spano. I've seen the spots more predominent after the fish has been out of the water a while, while in the net then trying to measure.

Without doubt spotty because spotties are shaded grey and schoolies (dogs) are shaded green and doggies don't have any small spots

For my money, if it has a white patch in the dorsal fin it will be delegated as a shoolie regardless of the spots or colouring of them. DPI will use the same criteria for ID.

I'd assume the same, seeing as though that's what the DPI website states for identification (the white spot, that is)....
Then again, I'm always wrong. Just ask my wife.

How many of these opinions here are made by people who have caught decent quantities of both, I wonder. Look at the votes, its a spottie and i would suggest people that have caught quantities of both can make that decision in a second.

I would suggest if you havent caught a lot of both then you shouldn't make a judgement.
I know some will arc up at that but its an objective statement.
Another thing that confirms its a spottie is the size, you rarely get schoolies (doggies) up to 78cm, I know they grow that big but not too many like that size are caught.

Its always the same with fish IDs, just shows how many people dont actually know the difference between closer looking species.
Ive seen it with discussion re Grassies and Spangled Emperor, Spotted and Barred Grunter and so on.
    Cheers

Quite right, and not just that you dont often get schoolies that long, but also, schoolies dimensions are different to spotties and schoolies are a much 'deeper' fish, where spotties are (in comparison) long and thin.
