Took the young fellow to Borumba dam for a two day father & son fishing and camping trip.
I don't know where it comes from, but Jason is an an absolute nut on fresh water fishing and loves Bass fishing with a passion. As a result. we normally do 2 or 3 freshwater sessions a year to satisfy his need, and by all means we are no fresh water guns, but Jason does know quite a lot from reading about fresh water fishing in magazines.
This year the target was Saratoga, so we went up to the Borumba to try to nail one. On the 4th cast I nail a small 24 cm Bass that was my 1st ever Bass and that got us excited and primed for the day ahead.
At the end of day 1, we landed 7 Bass 2 Togas and 1 Yellowbelly that was kept for a feed. Best Toga went 90 cm which is massive for Borumba as told by the caretaker of the Dam camping ground.
Personally. I didn't think that they would grow this big in south east QLD, so 90 cm was a surprise. I have caught a bigger one in corobooree billabong in Kakadu National park, but that was 20 years ago. Nevertheless, it was still nice to see a dancing Toga on top of the water twice as this fish did.
The dam is in prestine condition and close to 100% full. The water was extremely clear and at 28 deg C on the surface was quite warm. It was so clear that we could see the Togas cruising around about a foot under water.
Day 2 started off slow, the wind changed direction overnight and was hard to get the fish to bite, but soon we got stuck on the Bass and landed 6 and 1 Yellowbelly that was kept for a feed.
The interesting thing for the day was that Jason landed a tagged Bass with tag number T59259. We have rung the 1800 number as per the tag and passed on the information, but if the person that originally tagged it, is an AUSfish member, I can tell you we recaptured your fish about 1.2 km up Yabba Creek arm and was returned to the water in prime condition as found at 24.5 cm.
Here are some of the photos of a successful and enjoyable couple of days of a father and son camp.
By the way the young fellow was like a pig in shit the whole 2 days and extremely happy to see a Toga for the first time, and me a happy father for catching a couple to show him what they looked like.
Enjoy
