Headed off the Goldie on Wednesday with my son to hopefully chase mackerel for the first time on my boat.
Got to Mermaid at about 6am and their was only 2 other boats their. We could see they were catching spotties but we couldn't hook up . We had 3 strikes on bait but no luck.
We decided to go for a trawl and after about 10min and losing 2, picked up the spanish (7kg). My first ever so I was stoked.
We saw some birds working tightly so went for a look. It was a ball of bait!! Got the slugs on and it was on!!! One after the other. We caught about 12(spotties), kept 4, and one tuna for bait on a later day.
We lost all our slugs and they would not take anything else. We were satisfied so we headed back to the seaway.
That is a great shot of that bait ball. Congrats on your first spaniard and what a way to do it with your son. Hope to do the same with mine in a few more years.

I have planned to troll around Shag rock and the group ... any advice on leaders (wire ??) or anything would be very much appreciated.
My little fella (7) is SOOO keen to get out there but I just want to have your luck
It's so nice to see you spending quality time with your son fishing...excellent memories money can't buy. Catching a good feed makes it even sweeter! That's gold.
