Weipa Outfits

G'day,

Heading up to Weipa in April (weather permitting) for a week of fishing.

Am looking at taking 3 outfits.

1) Light spin, already got this one.

2) Heavier spinning outfit. Have purchased a Daiwa Saltist 6000 and also a Daiwa Monster Mesh Medium Spinning Rod.

MM702MS-SIC 7ft Long ... Action Medium ... Cast Weight 80-150 ... Drag Weight 9kg ... PE 2-4.

Does this outfit seem compatible? The local fishing shop said it is, and it feels well weighted. If so, does anyone have any line/braid recommendations?

3) Baitcasting outfit. Have bought a Shimano Curado E7 and currently looking for a suitable rod for this. I like to keep rods and reels similar if possible, so was looking at the T-curve Powercast 652 which is 1.96 metres ... 6-12kg ... and 15-60 Cast Weight.

Does this outfit seem compatible? If so, again, does anyone have any line/braid recommendations?

Any help would be much appreciated.

Mate I have a t-curve baitcaster rod for sale in the classifieds section, probly be along the lines of what you need, and might be able to save you some $$$ its brand new

Heavier spinning outfit:

Sound good. I will recommend either 50lb Tuf Line XP or Fins in terms of braid. Both very reliable.

Baitcast outfit:

I've also recently purchased a Shimano Curado and have it on a Nitro Undertaker Classic Barra (6'6, 4-6kg) with 15lb braid. For you, I'd recommend having a good look at the Nitro Dominator Extreme Barra (6'6, 6-8kg) and putting 20lb braid on it, again, either Tuf Line or Fins.

Depends what you're fishing for, theres alot on offer there. The heavier spin outfit you mentioned would be good for using slugs and plastics on the inshore reefs and possibly for pelagics inside the rivers. The baitcaster you mentioned sounds a bit long for snag casting but fine for open water. Go for something shorter if you plan on getting accuracy, 5'6" or shorter is good. Consider some heavier baitcast tackle like a large abu or calcutta for live baiting or throwing larger lures. Last July I tempted fate by fishing deep water around the Embley using a daiwa saltist 30/PE8 jig stick. Plenty of unstoppables even on that gear.

The Saltist 6000 is a big reel with a lot of drag. To me the rod is under rated for this work. Since you have a light spin stick you should put 50 to 80lb braid on the Saltist but this means a heavier rod. There's a MM rod to suit otherwise if you go 50lb, T-curve deep jig 200 or T-curve bluewater 15-24 kg. If you go above 50 lb deep jig 400 or still the bluewater 15-24 kg. The bluewater is longer so will help if you are chucking lures with it.
The Daiwa Catalina rods are also worth looking at as are the new range of Fin Nor offshore and Ahab rods. I checked the 80lb Fin Nor offshore out the other day and it is sweet.
You should find a rod amongst that but the current MM is too light.

For the spin and bait cast outfits, those choice seem pretty good.

On your bait cast I'd go with 30 lb power pro, great stuff and I use it myself on my curado 200 E7 and Samurai NV007 combo. Will stop almost everything on that.

For the heavy spin outfit, depending on what you'll be chasing, I'd be putting anything from 30-65 lb braid, again I'd choose powerpro, cos I just love the stuff
