I admit, i am a P Plater, and own a ute....howver the sides of mine stay unless necessity says they must come off, at which point they go back on when finished. I have my stock rims (97 rodeo). They aint damn sports cars.

Saw one ute the other day he had taken the drop-sides off the tray, then continued to GRIND OFF the toggles that they are attached on so that the sides CANT be put back on!! What The!!

    Good point young fella.
    Why??
Also why the polished timber trays where you can't put anything on the back...or having no headboard. Why??

Ah, it'll be a boring world if we were all the same wouldn't it. We'd have nobody to poke fun at.

I must say mine has a timber floor in the tray (steel sides, headboard etc.) , however the timber is warped and there aint no polish getting on it! the only covering it has is a nice layer of red dust! (Ex Peanut ute form kingaroy) Only reason its timber is that it was on the car when we bought it, otherwise woulda been normal.....maybe i should just get a life like everyone else my age ........then again i could stay sane

    I dunno
I'm looking at buying a Falcon trayback ute
2inch diameter alloy ladder rack/headboard with same contour as the roof, I only want it so I can mount a couple of matched stainless radio antennas, polished.

A piece of 2 or 3inch ally tube, split and welded to the sides of the tray and LED lights mounted in the rear edge of the tray, polished.

no sides(that's what ratchet strap/load binders are for).

Tie rails moved further under the tray out of sight.

    Timber tray floor, polished.

Two tray mounted ally(not checker plate)locker boxes, polished

Nothing wrong with wanting to have a nice looking ute, who says it has to carry stuff

Have a 2005 troopie 3 seater with draws in the back great truck i carpeted the back so when we go camping its more comfortable and better for our 4WD mattress. Vinyl seats big rubber mats great .Came back from the tablelands today 2 cars doing 80 in 100 zone passed both (need plenty of room in a troopy ) i think a bloke in the commodore got upset being passed by a troop carrier because next minute he flew past us and sat in front of us all the way to Cairns. Usually find when towing the boat back From Tinaroo they speed up when you can pass and slow down when you can't so you just just have to follow even doing 60 or 70 in a 100 zone can never understand why people do this.

Most of that is for looks... I cut my alloy tray back about a foot and only just got around to cutting the sides back and fitting latches etc..I dont do a trade so no need for em unless doing a dump run or up the beach..

    Goodo matey.
Is that why they raise the trays on the utes so you have to lift things over your head to put them on the back? For looks??

Gees I must be getting old. I'm just too old and lazy to cut anything back or to tie things down or to lift them up over my head to get them into the back.

But then this is my type of ute. A 1964 Datsun with a 1200cc motor and 4 speed on the column....and a push button AM/FM radio
It's not 4x4 either unless it gets pulled by the tractor

Its a good thing that some people buy a 4WD and never take it off the bitumin.......that is the sort of used car lots of us want to buy.

Me... I buy for function not looks.

My latest hilux came with a set of mags fitted....I recon I'll get enough to pay for half of a the new wheel and tyre arrangements by selling them on ebay......anybody want 4 15x7 ROH villans with legal rubber.

I cant for the life of me see whay someone would spend $$$$$ on fancy wheels and the take them off road.

Then there is the station waggon problem.........you simply cant buy a decent station waggon these days..so you have to buy either a peeople mover or an SUV.

    cheers
Its the details, those little details, that make the difference.

I find the same towing the van.. follow em for miles doin 80 come to passing lane do 110 then brake at end to 80. very frustrating but i find the old "pull on the left blinker and start pulling back into the left "often scares them off IF i can get just past there front bumper.. learned this trick by watching truckers. very effective in a B double.

One of the things I learned when first starting to drive trucks, is that you have to "manage" the space around your truck. (for safety)

Managing that space includes managing other vehicles if they aren't being effectively self-managed.

Indicators are to alert people to your intentions. I put on my left indicator to notify people that I intend on moving left. Just got to have a visible indicator past the driver's head to be effective. Don't have to have the back of the truck past him/her.

    Its all about management style.

Doesn't work usually on the open road.
    (a) they cannot hear your horn because the windows are up, A/C is on and Lee Kearnigan is on the CD player.
    (b) see (a)
    (c) they can't see past their A pillar or out any other window for some reason.

I followed a caravan into Lismore one day not so long ago.
All you could see was the back of the van...no car in front.
It was doing about 50km/hr and I was about 10 cars back in line when I caught up to it near the viaduct near Bangalow.
Actually they were towing the van with a Jeep something or rather and the Jeep thingo was hidden and they had no extension mirrors out either side.
They did not have a clue what was behind them. If they could have seen there were about 8,945 cars, trucks and buses behind them, About the only thing not folowing them was a DC3....but they did not, could not, would not care about any of them.
I gave them a few useful items of knowledge when they did pull up in Lismore. It just happened to be outside the Cedar Log confirming my instincts.
Tourists...they should be banned in caravans.
