yes they should work ok, its mostly about matching the size of the jig head to not overdo it with hook size and weight. lighter jigs allow you to impart more action for a range of fish, heavier will keep it plowing the bottom a bit more, which works well on flatties, stirring things up a bit.
I f you take on board the advice on here given by many of the reponses and my first post, you will be in good standing to get on to some fish.
Start our by casting at banks and bars, rather than indiscriminate casts in all directions. Early and late many fish are located in the margins close to banks and edges etc. A further tip is when you get a fish, or a bite, take a few breaths and SLOW DOWN! many times we can get a bit excited and speed up the action which will be counter productive in most cases.
Allow good pauses to incite strikes.

hey flatzie,
i just joined but i've now been fishing the hawksbury river obsessivley for 2 years, always for flatties, i have great fun and pull up the odd fish just about every time i go out. Im only 13 but i've had amazing success with a prototype 2" powerbait "micro" in pumpkin seed from berkley. It works wonders down near Sydney if you want to give it a shot, i hope it works for you.

Good advice Flatzie,

I'll nailed quite a few flathead on soft plastics around Rocky Dam Creek. Actually I can't remember the last time catching a flathead on biat. Haven't caught a grunter yet on plastics, however, it shouldn't be long.
