Tim (Tim_D) and myself met at Brian's (Scalem) at 3am on Sunday and headed to Manly with the Yalta. Joined the convoy of boats heading out through the Sth Passage Bar. Fished the first spot for a while with not much going on so once another boat moved on we refined our drift a bit and started to get into some big action. All three of us got hook ups on the next 3 drifts and all got smoked after a few minutes. Our 20lb leader was getting swapped for 30lb quickly after this. On the next drift I landed a nice 45cm Moses Perch which was a relief. Things went quiet as boats trolled nearby. We went for a troll to look for some new ground and after trying a few spots that didn't produce we found a spot that looked good on the sounder so we tried a few drifts. On the first drift Brian landed a nice pan size Squire and I got a hook up that spat the Gulp. On the next drift I got hooked up again and off she went. The 10kg Fleuger was loaded up big time and the Certate 4000 was almost set on full drag to control this fish. After a hard 10-15min battle we started to see some colour about 20m down. It looked massive down deep and Timmy called it for a Jewie after a few other guesses. I finally got it boat side and Brian got half of it in the net and we both struggled to pull it in. It was indeed a Jewfish and it ended up weighing 16kg and was 128cm. WHAT A RUSH!!! New PB for me, especially on 7" Gulp and light gear.
We set up again and went back to drift again. Bang.....I'm on again and off she goes. Still using 30lb leader, 1oz Jighead and Gulp Pink Shine. After another fight we get it boatside, in the net and it's a 12kg Jewfish this time and well over 1m. Now we're really rushing!!!
Once again we go back to drift again and I'm not sure if it was this drift or not but I hooked up once again on the same gear and another fight pursued. Soon another 12kg Jewfish was in the boat. By this stage I was knackered and happy for the boys to get into some action. Both Tim and Brian had a few hook ups but just couldn't set the hook. What are you doin boys??? I decided to have a 4th go and on the drift got hooked up to something even bigger. Line was peeling hard this time with the drag up almost full lock. It was running hard for the bottom and I didn't think I could stop it. After a few minutes of trying to control it, POP......away she went. Oh well....a great way to end a huge session.
The new esky was full, we were buggered, the wind was picking up so we headed home through the afternoon chop.
Thanks again to Brian for taking me out on the Yalta. Certainly blooded her in big time.
Here's some great picks below taken by Tim.
