mullet,
never heard of the place, is there 4
I have just returned from 6 days of fishing the beaches and rocky headlands of Deepwater National Park, just south of Agnes Waters. All the beaches in the park offer good fishing with lots of exposed rock bars, gutters and bommies to cast into. My favourite is Flat Rock beach as it has a large rock bar that runs parallel to the shore for its entire length. It is accessible by a good 4x4 track from Agnes Waters.
I exclusively used plastics and stuck with the 7.0’ Dropshot Rod and 2500 Seido reel. I fished mostly dawn and dusk each day for a couple of hours. The weather was a bit tricky the first few days with a 25 knot NE wind followed by a storm and then a 25 knot SE wind. I managed a few bream and small dart but in these conditions it was hard work.
Then the weather improved, the wind eased off and the water got clearer. As it did the dart got bigger and I started to land a few good sized Stripys as well. Finally the highlight was another big tussle with a Morwong all around the rocks. Luckily the 20lb leader was tough enough and I got the fish safely up the rocks and on to the dinner table that night.
I used Gulps and found that the Dart would eat anything where as the Stripys seem to prefer the paddle tails in the natural colours like Banana Prawn and Peppered Prawn. I swapped between ¼ 1 and 3/8th 2/0 jigheads but on the calmest day I dropped down to a 1/11th 1 jig head which the dart and whiting loved. Overall the best performing plastic was the Peppered Prawn 3” Minnow.
I attach photos to give you an idea of the range of fish on offer. We kept enough for a feed each day and returned the rest.
Great spot - great fishing.

Mullet,
Never heard of the place, is there 4WD access to the beach?
Jerson.
No, but there are 3 places along the way where you can lead the 4wd and hit up the beach. I love flat rock! One day i was hooked up to a 40cm dart when a HUGE (and i mean huge) GT swallowed it whole right on the top of the water, headed to the sunset and spat my dart out with about 10 wraps of braid on the spool. There are some quite big fish that could come in close. I'd be interested in seeing what a live bait there at night would see being caught.
hmm how accessible are the roads to 'soft roaders' such as the holden adventra ? I am looking for some decent camping / fishing spots up that way for some family adventures!

great fish and report mullet
thanks

Swabio,
They're not that great... some part have deepish sandy tracks that I wouldn't take anything but a 4wd with some clearance on there. Plus it's a long walk from the road that I wouldn't want to do, esp if carrying gear!
My understanding is that there is no probs getting to Wreck Rock camping ground in a 2WD from the south.... so potentially that is where we would be heading, how far is the Wreck Rock camp ground from some decent fishing? Also are their any decent spots nearby to chuck a cast net for some bait collection?

Swabio - there is good fishing right on the beach at Wreck Rock and then it is a 25 min walk down the beach to Middle Rock. From the south the road in is fine in two wheel drive but it will certainly shake out any loose fillings! The last stretch into Wreck Rock is very very bumpy but not hard to navigate, if you travel slowly. I have a Suzi Gran Vitara and have never got stuck up there, coming from north or south but there certainly are some soft sand pacthes on the route in from the North via Agnes Waters. It is a great spot and I think on a calm day you could successfully get a few liveis in the shallows with a cast net at Wreck Rock.
Thanks MM,
We have a AWD holden adventra, so not too fussed about the southern route in, It is currently a toss up between Wreck Rock and hervey bay at the moment.... I'd prefer to head to wreck rock, but it is my wife's first tent adventure.... so if we do the HB option it lets her get used to it before bammo off into the bush

Wreck Rock is beautiful but basic - drop toilet and one cold outdoor shower and a bore tap. My Mrs won't go near a tent so I am on my own or just with my son - your doing well!
Swabio, if you are thinking of Wreck rock between December and early Feb, then you also have the chance of viewing nesting sea turtles at night. Nev and Bev are the campground hosts at Wreck Rock campground and should give you all the info you need.
Cheers.
Thanks for that, wel will be heading up that way next trip.... prob towards mid jan if possible. This time we'll take the kids
Well, posting this from Torquay beachfront caravan park ..... the wife is having fun in the tent, we have sorted most things out... so next trip off to the wreck wrock.... although the amount of crap we are carting... i reckon it will be a trailer job if we take the kids
My mrs prob wont enjoy the toilet there.... but is well used to cold showers Originally from Indonesia, she still likes the freshness of cold showers... Which I also love on a hot day
Well, back to it for now..... logged on to try and fix my stupid Garmin 1390T.... nope.... it has died, so have to get a replacement when we get back!
Have a good one!
