Got access to the truck ( it was previously going to be towing a load interstate but was back early as they drove straight through as accomodation was screwed up) and the RR was only ever a 2nd choice out of necessity. Wasn't needed in the end so didn't even get it to show up.

Used another mates disco at the ramp and went for a quick run up and down the road with it and being a 15y old TD well worn it was a lot of load for it and although coping with the ball weight under brakes it could have done with some load leveler bars or it's rear suspension done. Could have done with 5-10 bags of cement in the back.

Be interesting to see boat and trailer over the weighbridge as a well maintained disco with a fresh motor or the V8 would make a huge difference. You really notice the wear on suspension parts with big loads over 70km/h. We have changed parts in the truck before mechanics have seen the wear as we feel it getting "sloppy" and they can get no movement on the hoist in the workshop.

    G'day,

Well, you either lucked out on a good or bad experience.

The 15-year old Discovery is significantly underweight for what you are doing but in low range (at 44:1 reduction - manual) they are brilliant for low range manouvering.

My Discovery TD5 Auto struggles with 2-tonne on the back even though it's rated for 3.5 tonne. It's lack of power, not chassis or suspension. I've done what the owner's handbook says and shifted to low range for standing starts but it doesn't like hills.

That's why I bought the Rodeo and it works.

Low range no real worries , really had to time gear changes on slight gradient, high it was struggling.

Have to say after always towing with overgunned vehicles and light trucks I realy didn;t like the feeling of stepping back and having to concentrate so much. The v8 I have driven would have done it a lot easier and a lot less fatigue.

Makes you think about some of the stuff I see being towed must really be on the limits of the vehicle let alone the driver. With teh new wider load permit - well I don't see that lasting long before insurers won't cover it. Limit of weight and huge windage of a big cat is not a good combination for waranty as the speeds people want to travel at.

Around the farm no worries but at speed with other cars around you I would prefer not to be in the upper limits of a vehicle tow capacity.

My 95 V8i Discovery auto tows my 2 tonn Vagabond ok, but not as good as my 02 Discovery V8 manual does. I very rarely slip her into low except at the ramp to save the clutch and I did slip her down once on East Brisbane on a very steep hill at a stop sign intersection with cars approaching fast...no accelerator just out with the clutch pedal and off she goes like a tractor and then short shift to third and then double shuffle the box back to high range and your away.

White Pointer - they reckon the TD5's were better for towing than the Tdi's but I have also heard owners saying that the Tdi off the line was better than the Td5 down low.

    Cheers
