Townsville - Grub Reef 28th Nov

Jason, kindly invited me out for a reef trip on Saturday morning early last week, hoping the weather would stay good, and it kindly did so with hardly a breath of wind blowing all day, though we could have used a bit of a breeze, damn it was hot out there!

Anyway, arrangement were made and I met him at the Coastguard ramp at 4.15am, with the good weather I was expecting the car park to be chockers at that time, but I was pleasantly surprised to find it over half empty, when Jason Arrived, my gear was loaded, I parked up at the casino and we were off on our 2 hour journey to Grub.

Each bommie we fished produced a few trout and plenty of trickies, and the conditions were near perfect, which you will be able to tell from the pics below. But bloody hell, at the risk of sounding repetitive, it was friggin hot as hell, with sweat pouring off us all day. So there was plenty of sunscreen used, and plenty or water and amber fluid downed throughout the day with a steady stream of good sized trout (most around 3kg I spose) and trickies falling to our baits. Pillies generated the most interest, with very few takers of the bay squid that was caught during a fingermark session in the previous weeks.

We fished a few different bommie and a bit after 1pm came aboard a first for everyone, first for the boat, first to see in the flesh, and a first time capture for me, a very good 66cm Footballer trout, caught as a double header with a tomato cod. I knew it was a good trout whilst bringing it up, but geez, I never expected to get one of these, a very pretty looking fish with the yellow, pink and brown:

How good are those conditions in the background hey?

Anyway, it was that time of day when the tide was changing and the fish decided to go off the bite, so we pulled the pick, and headed off to one of Jason's red fish marks, and geez there were some fish there with the sounder lighting up like a christmas tree. We couldn't hold bottom with the plough, but managed a few drifts for us to boat about 20 silver nannies and a red emperor for good measure for us to up anchor for the last time and make the trip home at around 5.30pm. We only took a couple of pics, but here's one of yet another double header:

Condition still good, the trip home was fairly uneventful until we reached the shoals, where the inshore afternoon seabreeze had kicked up a nice bit of chop, where I had to stand up or risk losing my ability of fathering children at some stage

There is a fine line between fishing and just standing on the shore like an idiot

I wonder how much deeper the ocean would be without sponges

Up here we Use Hussar as baits for real RED FISHS (SHSIIFDER)

couldn't see any birds, not that we were really keeping a look out, but there were pleny of tuna busting up everywhere.

Also keep in mind those conditions are about 58 mile out, the roughest part was when we were in closer

    Good fish there Scott

Hey, have you ever tried using livies for trout?

When I lived up there, we used pillies and flesh baits as well, just seemed to be the norm.

Since however, I have been shown the aggression that a trout hits a livie with - and it is strictly livies for me for trout unless I had none available.

sounds like you had a brilliant trip there mate

    cheers

Nice fish scott.. you did better than we did...
Mick i agree livies are the best bait for trout.. however the 25cm limit on reef fish these days means you have to use mullet or the similar otherwise you generaly get smashed by something too big to hold.. i got a 63cm trout on the weekend on a small fish i had hooked on my line (was waiting to get a second fish on the other hook, didn't feel like bringing it up 38m for one)

are livies not available at the beacons on the way out?

Re: Townsville - Grub Reef 28th Nov

yeah probably mate but the boats baised up in Ingham and we normally go out from lucinda and we've found it too much of a pain to try and find the bait schools at the end of the jetty particularly when its still dark..

trueblue, yeah we could get livies on the beacons, but usually the bait tanks are full of dead baits to avoid contamination of the fish box with squid and pilchard juice. Will have to try it one day though and hope the nice big yakka's don't tie a few fancy knots in everyone's rigs.
