Jason, kindly invited me out for a reef trip on Saturday morning early last week, hoping the weather would stay good, and it kindly did so with hardly a breath of wind blowing all day, though we could have used a bit of a breeze, damn it was hot out there!
Anyway, arrangement were made and I met him at the Coastguard ramp at 4.15am, with the good weather I was expecting the car park to be chockers at that time, but I was pleasantly surprised to find it over half empty, when Jason Arrived, my gear was loaded, I parked up at the casino and we were off on our 2 hour journey to Grub.
Each bommie we fished produced a few trout and plenty of trickies, and the conditions were near perfect, which you will be able to tell from the pics below. But bloody hell, at the risk of sounding repetitive, it was friggin hot as hell, with sweat pouring off us all day. So there was plenty of sunscreen used, and plenty or water and amber fluid downed throughout the day with a steady stream of good sized trout (most around 3kg I spose) and trickies falling to our baits. Pillies generated the most interest, with very few takers of the bay squid that was caught during a fingermark session in the previous weeks.
We fished a few different bommie and a bit after 1pm came aboard a first for everyone, first for the boat, first to see in the flesh, and a first time capture for me, a very good 66cm Footballer trout, caught as a double header with a tomato cod. I knew it was a good trout whilst bringing it up, but geez, I never expected to get one of these, a very pretty looking fish with the yellow, pink and brown:
How good are those conditions in the background hey?
Anyway, it was that time of day when the tide was changing and the fish decided to go off the bite, so we pulled the pick, and headed off to one of Jason's red fish marks, and geez there were some fish there with the sounder lighting up like a christmas tree. We couldn't hold bottom with the plough, but managed a few drifts for us to boat about 20 silver nannies and a red emperor for good measure for us to up anchor for the last time and make the trip home at around 5.30pm. We only took a couple of pics, but here's one of yet another double header:
Condition still good, the trip home was fairly uneventful until we reached the shoals, where the inshore afternoon seabreeze had kicked up a nice bit of chop, where I had to stand up or risk losing my ability of fathering children at some stage
