I heard from someone who bagged out on trout from one of the inner reefs midweek but I've been cursed with work.

5 Macks, 1 nice trout and the fish in the photo (ID please). Did catch plenty of other stuff including trevs of reasonable size. Eastern end of Undine on Thursday. Didn't stay out long.

How'd you get the macks mate, trolling? What sizes? Cheers.
Hi Nicko,
Try attachment again as I had the boss check it out, she may have fixed it. Lures were a RMG red head and no name brand pink and blue thing. All the macks were on the small side, around 70-100cm.
Cheers,

Ok cool mate, nah the attachment still doesn't work, cheers.
Hi Guys,
I moved to Port Douglas about 6 months ago from Perth. The beach rod hasn't been getting to much use around here and I've been getting a bit itchy to get back out on water. So after a couple of trips here an there on other people's boats & everyone warning me to never put the kayak in the river, I've gone an got me a nice old boat to get me out onto the Mack's & GT's. Had to splash out on some new hardware too, so a matching pair of saragosa 18000's matched with Wilson live fibre spin rods will hopefully help put some fish on the table.
Anyways il chuck up a intro thread in the next couple of days when I bring my new tub home.
Il be keeping a close eye on this thread
Happy Fishing!!
welcome Matty,
some good macks taken from Satellite reef I'm told, a few charted and uncharted wrecks out from Port Douglas and some good reds landed from the rubble too. keep an eye on the monthly lineburner magazine from the fishingportdouglas website it's a great read. plenty of good beach fish landed off wonga too, so don't let that beachrod get too dusty!
Nick.
Went out today fishing inner reefs. Spaniards were everywhere and hungry. Not big though with the biggest about 8kg. Bottom fishing was very slow where we were probably due to no current whatsoever. Couldnt catch a trout to save ourselves.
Went out of the Daintree yesterday with Daintreeboy, it was a tough fish in terms of macks.. saw them on the sounder early morning before first light but once the sun came up we didn't see another one on the sounder all day. Despite the westerly wind influence during the day (according to the Low Isles obs when I got home), Daintreeboy smashed me on the fishing stakes, I tried to use a rod that was way too thick and will now be reserved to trolling only, need to get my usual rod fixed asap. Think he would have smashed me anyway but I would have caught a few more I think. So later I tried his wife's rod with a stella 10000, and boy is that combo sweet! Such a nice reel I can easily see what all the fuss is about them, so silky smooth..didn't want to give it backthanks for letting me try it.
Anyway I learned a couple good little tips thanks Daintreeboy, floating baits are an absolute must, keep your balloons for kids parties (unless you'e in the shallow stuff I guess). No macks in my usual mack spot, not even a hint of bait. Anyway Daintreeboy did well on some solid reefies but I won't spoil his thunder too much. I will say that every fish he called he was bang on, scarily accurate and even called a piece of coral and coral trout, haha nice work.
Did try to fish a wonky later but there was a boat coming, spewing could have been a trophy fish down there, oh well another time.
Oh, thanks to the knob who cut in front of us trolling and threw their lures out, great just great.. even with the fairly large bit of structure we were trolling there was plenty of room anywhere but bang in front of us, and trolling etiquette is if you absolutely must troll in the same location at least follow the boat that's already there!
Off to Tinaroo to try and get a barra.
I'm gonna be up that way soon. I'm looking forward to it.
Wow, it's been a long time since i have posted on here! I went out about two weeks ago, in the one day window we had between weather. Headed to spot x for a night fish and the spanged emperor were on the chew! Was a good night, red throat, nannies also....
Hey guys,
Daintree river clean-up next Saturday if anyone is keen. Cheers.

Hi guys, I just sent this to the Minister for Fisheries (and other things.. agriculture@ministerial.qld.gov.au ) I know some poor staff member is going to have to write back to me, but I thought stuff it, Brisbane have a lot of wrecks (see below) and yes we have the reef but there's a lot of the year that we can't get there (preaching to the converted I know).. so a few inshore options of reefballs, or let's go crazy and say two new wrecks would be fantastic..
If he says no, fair enough but I do want to know why not. Don't get me wrong, I think the new reefballs off Brisbane are fantastic, but if you're bored enough grab a stubby and have a read.. if you agree then please fire an email to the Minister. Cheers, flame away.. here's my quick email, not sure if I should post this somewhere else on Ausfish, and if so..where?
Good evening Minister,
I was very pleased to read the reef ball article on Australia's largest fishing forum: http://www.ausfish.com.au/vforum/sho...-updates.-MBMP
It saddens me though that the same amount of effort per captia doesn't happen in North Queensland, yes we have the Great Barrier Reef; however a few reef ball sites or even a fishing/diving Navy wreck of our own would be fantastic. We arguably also hold the most amount of recreational vessels per capita, although I haven't officially checked with the Beurea of Statistics, a drive down most streets of either Cairns or Port Douglas and surrounds will quickly show you that we are largely a boating populace/electorate, be that for fishing, diving, sailing or general site seeing.
A deployment of reef balls off the coast of two of the state's leading fishing towns, namely Cairns and Port Douglas would be fantastic both for the fleet of professional guided fishing charters and recreational anglers/divers alike.
A great site for reef balls would be approximately 5 nautical miles offshore, in the middle ground between the coastline and the reef. This would assist the small boat brigade that reside in Cairns and Port Douglas to have a potential fishing spot without travelling to the reef proper. Due to the tradewinds which are present for the majority of the year, a trip to even the inner reefs is often uncomfortable, a closer option would enable many of us to have a viable fishing ground on the 50/50 days where anglers toss up between heading to the reef uncomfortably, or staying at home. On better days it would offer a good fishing spot to the small boat brigade without heading to the reef proper, this would enable a great site to take children for example as it would only take 20 minutes or so in a small vessel to return to shore.
Needless to say every day of fishing also gives back to the North Queensland economy, through tourism and items such as fuel, tackle, food and alcohol (in moderation).
Through a very quick online search, here is a map of artificial sites available to Brisbane anglers/divers: http://www.nprsr.qld.gov.au/parks/mo...cality-map.pdf not included on this map is also the Bulwer shipwrecks, which is a series of 15 individual shipwrecks: http://www.divingthegoldcoast.com.au...ite=tangalooma also if 15 shipwrecks aren't enough for a diver/fisherman then there's also a large amount of concrete pipes, car bodies, steel pontoons, car/truck tyres and more. From memory as a much younger man I even dived the wreck of a school bus at this dive site. Here's another link with even more items listed at this site: http://www.urgq.org/Dive%20Sites/curtin_artif_reef.htm
Also the HMAS Brisbane has been purposefully sunk off Mooloolaba: http://www.divingthegoldcoast.com.au...ageID=hmasbris
So in short I'll share this email with some of the North Queensland fishing fraternity and hope that they too take the time to write to you so we might have two reef ball systems of our own, or even a wreck, or two or fifteen.
Thank you for your time, for your due consideration.
Good work. I would have even gone further with the 'uncomfortable' aspect and used the term 'safely'. A lot of days up this way when travelling to the reef in a small tinny is simply not safe.
