Thread: Pajero Timing Belt

    Pajero Timing Belt

Well my 2002 Pajero has just over 100k on it and I guess I should get the timing belt changed.

Now who is Brisbane can do the job well and not charge the earth?

I have heard differing stories aout buying hte belt yourself to save $'s as you can save upwards of $200 if doing it this way. Any truth to the storey?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    Cheers

    Re: Pajero Timing Belt

get a mechanic to do it....... not an easy job.

Note: The water pump is behind the timing belt - consider if it needs being done (sealed unit) because if you do the timing belt and 6 months later the water pump seal blows - the timing belt is coming right back out again.............

yep Pajero, tricky job, but not beyond the scope of a reasonable home mechanic, do water pump for sure as well, it is a bugger of a job, I would pay someone to do it, even though I did one as a favour for someone else, I reckon I would never do one again (unless it was mine).

    Re: Pajero Timing Belt

if you have to ask the question - I reckon get it done for you.

But by all means get a mobile mechanic to do it, and watch him do it, then if mechanically minded you would be able to do it next time after you see where the difficult parts are.

My pajero has 320,000 klms on it..... good motors

I guess that is a fair comment, if you have to ask, leave it alone.

    Re: Pajero Timing Belt

You will save more like $400+, lee do you know someone who can give you a hand?

I did my first Mitsubishi timing belt only 2 weeks ago, there where a couple of spots where I needed to use learned tricks to get through without undue drama...the entire job is fully within the scope of a mobile mechanic, if your not to disruptive you could watch?.

Real good advice changing the water pump at the same time I also did the front main seal...ask Mitsi spare parts for their value pack, within this they supplied to me the identical belt (dayco) i could buy over the counter at repco etc so ring around, still in my case on the Lancer the value pack (genuine) came out ahead, never had that happen before buying parts.

Get onto Richard at Motorcare at Bowen Hills. He is very experienced with all things Pajero and comes recommended by many Paj club members (myself included) I have him do the work on my T/D 05 Pajero. He is straight up no bull and charges a fair price. They have done a lot of development work on the V6 engines and really know their way around these cars. You will find they will probably suggest doing the water pump at the same time, this is not uncommon practice.

quad cam timing, prob would not attempt unless you have some decent experience, there are mits special tools to hold the cams in position and if you muck it up you are in big trouble. i have heard of Richard at motorcare and sounds like they know what they are doin. Cheers Lee

They should all have markers on them though. Or you can mark it yourself. I did a friends Magna recently and if you're not in for the long haul don't do it. But do ring around for the parts, can save a buck depending on who the mechanics supplier is.

Silly, I know, but I'm presuming you don't have a diesel! I do and my logbook mistakenly said to replace the belt after 100K.

    Re: Pajero Timing Belt

Mate, do the lot while the cover is off.
Water pump, timing belt, maybe even the seals.

I did my v6 Triton in june.
Pretty simple really. Lined up the marks but the tensioner was a bit fiddly.

Easy to get to as well.
Although it was a replacement motor I was putting in and it was on the work bench at the time.

    Re: Pajero Timing Belt

I paid a decent mechanic to do my 1993 Pajero. Replaced the timing belt, and did the water pump while I was there whether it needed doing or not. Had a few other things done to it as well which all up cost me just under $1800 at the time. Clocked another 120,000 k's on her since I had that all done and decided that my offroad days were all but over and the desire to go back into a "fast" car got the better of me so the poor old faithful Pajero got traded in on a HSV Clubsport R8. . AF has an offroad section, almost time to have a section for the rev heads?
