Thread: Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo- Thoughts

Bollocks to the generalisation about one will be running in 20 years and the other wont. Toyota have had their share of problems with the newer engines and front diffs and most cars properly serviced will last very well. Toyota do not have a monopoly on longevity (particularly where rust is concerned in the older ones).

I dont mind at all people's opinions on these things, but please, talking through ones buttocks as though its gospel truth is not helpful particularly for those who have not owned one or more of the particular brand.

I realize all vehicles have their faults but go and ask second hand car dealers what they think of them

    Hi OzScott.

The photos on page one of this thread depicted a Jeep Cheroke VS a 70 series landcruiser. My 20 year comment was in regard to these two specific vehicles. There is no comparison between these vehicles….when it comes to comfort, sure the Jeep will be a lot nicer to drive and has more comfort features… but when it comes to reliability…there is no question…one would be talking through their buttocks to suggest otherwise...

I was advised not to buy a second hand Jeep Cherokee back in 2002 by a mechanic who serviced them. I was living in Sydney at the time. They were very tempting because second hand they were soooo unbelievably cheap!!

With regard to the comment you made on a monopoly on longevity….I agree, I ended up buying something other than a Toyo.

Mate - I dont know. From what I read on teh forums Toyo has had to replace several TTD V8's with some blowing. It also seems that some owners are reporting huge amounts of oil and driveline vibrations are showing up...

    Cheers

PS I know that is not typical of toyota and the earlier series and motors did not generally have any issues of that severity

PPS I know the 70 has single turbo but the problem as I understand it is glazing of the bores re oil use, but I dont know what causes the failures

TTD blowing up? Do you have a specific case you're referring to?
I follow the 200 series LCOOL forum and have not heard of any blowing up. Reliability has been excellent as far as I can tell.

There were definitely problems with driveline noises which were fixed, I believe, and there were problems with oil consumption that are still ongoing for some owners I believe.
But I've not heard of any blowing up.

I have read of cases here and in NZ where Toyota are replacing engines. One of those places is allegedly a Coal Mine in NZ where several engines have had to be replaced. I doubt it will become a major issue, but again I posted it because of the blanket statement about what will be around in 20 years time.

Posted: Thu Jan 14, 2010 10:39 am Our 2008 Jeep Wrangler Sport Unlimited went in for repair to an authorised Jeep dealership on 4 November 2009. We haven't seen it since - that is 72 days without our vehicle and the vehicle is still not fit for purpose.

The dealership has provided excuses such as lack of necessary tools, not ordering right parts, and an error in the reassembly of the vehicle.

Today, we have written to Jeep Australia requesting a replacement vehicle or a full refund. We have given them to 3pm Perth time to reply.

We are asking for your support to make this happen.

We are exhausted, anxious, financially disadvantaged and have spent the Christmas holidays with the kids at home.

United, we can let Jeep Customer Service know that Jeep owners deserve better than this. If we stand together we can send Jeep Australia a clear message and we can stop this from happening to other Jeep owners.

Please ring Jeep Australia Customer Service on 1300 133 079, customer reference Yuen, and request them to correct this breach of integrity immediately and as a community we will not stand for this.

At the very least your call will tell Jeep that we are not alone, that they are now dealing with the Jeep Community in mass - we need all the help we can get to fix this issue without further disadvantage to our family.

Your support is greatly appreciated. Thank you from the bottom of our hearts.

Please let others know of our plight and need for assistance.

Probably coming in a bit late on this one....

I've had a V8 2001 JGC since 2004, and prior to that I had a solid front axle hilux raised to the bejeesus. Used both off road although nowadays the JGC is used by the missus to get to work and back and I only use it to tow the boat

    Compared to the Tojo...

    Pros

Cheap to buy second hand. I paid half the new price for mine in mint condition and loaded with accessories

Very hard to beat on the beach thanks to the soft travel, comparibly lighter weight and V8.

Very nice to drive. My father had a newish cruiser with the solid front axle and the Jeep was more car like drive

Been surprisingly reliable compared to what I had heard and was expecting. So far only a couple of minor electrical problems (wires breaking that run to the doors) and dodgy brake disks (a common problem, but cheap to fix).

    Kick-ass sound system

Towed a number of boats with it including a 20 ft trailer sailer and the current 5.5m platey - tows great. The OEM towbar has a plate on it that says it can tow 2900 Kg or thereabouts. I put poly spring air bag thingies on the back to help keep the bum up when loaded.

The full time four wheel drive is fantastic on steep and slippery ramps.

    Cons:

The diffs drag in the dirt whilst driving in wheel ruts made by 'cruisers (true!). The Tojo ate this stuff for breakfast

Low ground clearance and soft suspension makes roughish tracks a bit of a challenge - the bash guards have to work hard

The thought of having to buy parts from the dealer sends shivers down my spine - as an example, when I bent up the front plastic "bumper bar", it worked out cheaper to replace it with an alloy bull bar. Also, everytime I order a part from Repco I have to wait a week and pay freight.

I wouldn't attempt to cross a creek in it

All said and done, I purchased it with the intention of towing a boat and doing some casual offroad stuff and I can say I would certainly buy another when this one wears out.
