Does anybody know the regulations for catching lobster/crayfish in QLD, are you allowed to use pots etc. Are they any good for eating?
Thanks Andrew

U a Wassie mate??? (west aussie)
Crays over here are Painted Crays or Tropical Rock Lobsters. No pots, take by hand only...Not that theres a law against pots but they are vegetarian....Wont take a bait...Apparently they tried to develop baits for years so they could commercially fish the Tropical Lobster..No go...
So off with ya gear, on with the snorkell and goggles and in ya go....
OH 1 more thing, when ya catch em they squeel....Like throwing blood in the water...Sharks come from miles so get a few and get out...
I CAME INTO THIS WORLD KICKING, SCREAMING AND COVERED IN SOMEONE ELSES BLOOD. I HAVE NO PROBLEM GOING OUT THE SAME WAY.
NEWBY T.G.
And unlike W.A and Vic....NO SCUBA....but you can use a spear
Don't expect them to taste anywhere near as good as southern rock lobster....
Newby, suprisingly, they do eat fish flesh and can be caught on a line/baited hook, (hooked in the mouth), although they may eat fish flesh for dietary supplementation or something similar to this. They can at times be seen walking out from under ledges and grabbing burley as it sinks to the floor.
Cheers,
Johnny Mitch
I had a couple in a tank years ago and they were partial to an odd bit of spanish mackerel flesh - mates who thought they only were vegetarians were certainly surprised by this. Not saying they rampant eaters of meat but certainly they might be more of an omnivore than people think.....
Moving from WA it has been so much easier to catch them over here using a spear. IMHO they are not moreton bay bug in terms of eating quality but with a little flavouring and not overcooked they are quiet nice to eat - my missus loves 'em
Kev
Thanks Guys
Where would I find them? Do you spear them whilst snorkeling or do you spear them in rock pools at low tide?
ive caught 2 at night on bait
at then neerings off mooloolaba
pete
Fishmatics, they are either grabbed by a gloved hand or speared whilst snorkelling, you will find them in ledges and caves in and around reefs, shallower water seems to be best (like 5-10m) apparently, probably just because its easier though
