Thread: Anyone else thinking about running 2 stroke oil in their diesel?

Anyone else thinking about running 2 stroke oil in their diesel?

It's a common enough topic these days, just wondering if anyone has ACTUAL TECHNICAL DATA that may be of any assistance - esp for common rail engines. It would appear that the positives for the mechanically injected boys are tangible, just concerned about the newer systems.

Not sure I would risk 2 stroke oil in my new 2.5TD Navara... no mater what the data says what do you recon the manufacturer will say when you are puting in for a warranty claim on an engine failure

there would seem to be a few upsides to it. The euro's have been into it for a number of years now, and I haven't been able to find a single failure that's been attributed to it.
As far as I can gather it is added about 200:1 (250ml per 50l).
The practise gained momentum as a lubricant when low sulphur diesel was introduced, and the evidence would seem to show that fuel pumps etc are lasting longer.
    Upsides:
    • Increased lubricity
    • Noticeably quieter running
    • Smoother running
    • Slightly better power
    • Better economy
Note : only non-synthetic low ash oil is recommended.

    Some light reading:

I think if I had an older diesel I'd be straight into it - just don't know about the common rail system.

Id ditch that idea and just run MOREY'S DIESEL ADDITIVE. My dad got onto that stuff ages ago. You add the required amount to your tank and repeat until the bottle is empty. Once he finished the bottle, he got way better fuel eco (meaning now even after the bottle has finished). Give it a try...

The problem I see is cost recovery
is the cost of buying it going to save you anything over the life of the fuel pump
I'd be skeptical about any fuel savings or power increase
and then you have to look at how long you are going to keep the vehicle
if you only have it for 150,000klms what benefit would you see on any improved fuel pump lifespan

I think I'd like to see some more proper data on it other than someone saying
"Yeah I added it an I think my engine sounds like it's running quieter"

I have run it for a while now but not in the last 9 months or so, it's just an oil and a fairly benign one at that, personally I cannot conceive how in any engine it would cause harm but who knows things get attributed easily these days.

The diesel sits for good periods of time lately, perhaps I should be dosing it again. I never noticed any change in economy, power or quietness but i was not looking for them.....Oh whenever I add ULP to the tank I will also add some TCW3 to cover it.

Are you adding two stroke to a ulp vehicle? Or filling up with diesel, ulp and two stroke?
    Sorry, just a bit confused.

I've got to admit FNQ, I was actually looking forward to your opinion on this - it would seem you have some credentials in this field? Or at least your previous posts have lead me to think that?

Have you been using it just for lubricity?

I know at least one hire company that runs some two stroke in all of their four stroke portable machinery (gensets etc)., and has done for years.

Would you see it being an issue in a CR motor at 200:1?

No mate I was speaking only of my precomp Nissan engine, I have no credentials on this outside of a big mouth.

I get a bee in my bonnet at times and go on a researching spree (science side of it all as best i can) until I am satisfied I have cut through the crap.

I would run it if I had your engine but only for the lubricity and only after warranty has ran it's course. I have read user reports where they claim cleaner engines and all that other stuff...I just dunno but understand it doesnt actually have to do anthing more just so long as the person thinks it did.... should be enough to use it again.

I could see the value in an older style diesel but to be honest all of the newer common rail type systems are all designed to run on low sulpher diesel anyway. I would be more concerened about getting clean fuel because the tolerances on the injector pumps are much closer and they are very easily damaged by contaminated fuel i.e water or particle contaminant. If you wanted to add anything to the fuel I would be looking at a diesel biocide to keep the fuel clean and free of diesel bug firstly and some will also contain a pump lubricant.

The engines talked about in the forum link were all common rail engines
most diesels in EU have been common rail for 10 years now

the idea of using it to lube the pump has validity, two stroke oil keeps engine bearings lubed, that's it's job
all the rest of the claims make no sense as two stroke oil is just an oil
not a cleaning agent or combustion enhancer and the small quantities used would not make any impact anyway
