    FINALLY!! Drought Broken

We'll not the golden kind anyway, but for a long time I hadn't raised a decent scale.

So having booked up holidays for this week, I was hoping to get a lot of fishing in, but Huey had other ideas, so i set my mind to at least one of 3 night, chasing fingers, Wednesday, Thursday and would've been tonight, but that wind has gotten way up there again .

Anyway, with a barrage of phone calls to and from just about everyone I knew, I finally came to an agreement with Mozza, that we would head out in his tinny from Pallerenda and take huey on to see if his bite matched his bark. With some delays we finally got on the water at about 4.30 and punched through the slop in his 4.2m plate bottom tinny, which went surprisingly well, that is until the transducer broke..... , oh well, we'll be fishing by GPS alone tonight. First port of call was the sandy beaches on the inside of Maggie to get some bait, which was bloody hard to get, we only managed a few whiting around the 25-27cm mark, well its better than nothing. By the time we'd given up on the bait, it was just about dark so we high tailed it to a new mark, and we met with decent conditions around the point. The tide was coming in and the wind was following it which made anchoring easy, we were situated very close to our desired mark, but its very good ground around it so we still remained hopeful.

The squid light was deployed before the moon came up, and a couple of live whiting were sent to the bottom. It wasn't long until Mozza gets belted and has a solid hook up, but something was different, instead of bolting for the bottom it shot straight to the top and jumped!! Holy moley batman its a Barra! WTF is that doing out here, anyway the drag is backed off and it was all over in a matter of minutes thanks to the heavy fingermark gear and I slipped the net under a 85cm Barra.....a bit late though, so a quick photoshoot and the girls sent on her way to let loose the new generation of chrome beasts

Not long after this the squid started to show, and this time they were not so much in good numbers, but at last they have started to get some size about them. Mozza nets and donates the first one to my hook whilst he waits for another to show. Not mong after he gets one for himself. In the meantime, i bait up another rod and cast it out the back for a grunter, and bloody heel were they timid last night, biting like tiddlers until they started to move of with the bait, and even then, I would either miss the hook up or they would drop it and not come back. All of a sudden My squid goes off, hard to the bottom, I'm just about to pick the rod up and all is lost, I wind up to find the hook had swung around and buried itself into the now dead (but still whole) squid. It was a big fish, the entire squid was roughed up and still in one piece, I would go as far as saying it was close to a 10kg fish judging by the bend in the 24kg rod and the amount of drag it pulled, seemingly without effort, that's the second fish I've missed for the night. Mozza takes his que, and lifts his rod out of the holder, and almost instantaneously he's on A short fight and up comes a 55cm finger, forgot to take a photo on the water so here's one of the dead fish back at Mozza's joint:

By tis time we had accrued a few live squid in the bucket, so we both send a fresh one down. I use the newly dead squid as a cut bait for grunter on the other line but despite another 2-3 good runs, I still fail to hook up.....by this time I'm really getting annoyed, I've missed 3 or 4 fish by now and it was really getting one my nerves.

In between cursing the timid biting grunter, we intermittently checked our live squid bait to find they were either getting head bitten off or were being mouthed by some hungry, but not in feed mode, fingers, the squid coming back in all roughed up and skin missing. I noticed some attention being given to my grunter line and this time to play it safe I flick the bail arm over and feed line out to the fish, I must've fed 50-60m of line out before I strike and I'm finally ON! It didn't feel all that big because it fought a bit like a wet sock on the way to the boat, but as it came closer it got a bit of life into it and up comes a nice grunter going about 66cm. It felt really light, but weighing it at home proved it to be a solid 4kg fish:

By this time it was around 10-10.30, so we decided it would be time to head for home as we tidied up a bit. I had another run and hook up on my grunter line which proved to be vermin (small shark), so I rebaited and cast out while we did the remaining of the tidying up, and I hook up again, yet another shark, so OK the vermin have moved and and It's time to go.

It was a great trip out and the weather wasn't nearly as bad as I though it would be, with the bay being almost a total glass out on the way back.
