    sounder not reading.

    i got a humminbird 777c combo.
the gps works, but on occassions the sounder wont read depths or the bottom.
was out last week and the depth just kept flashing and the bottom wouldnt show.
once i was under way it started reading again.
then the reading would flash again.
i then stopped again and it was ok.
    why would this be?

    cheers

Check your connections, you may have a break in the wiring loom.

See if you can find someone with the same unit and hook up their transducer to your unit. This will tell you whether or not it is your transducer or sounder at fault..

My money would be on your transducer wiring being faulty

    Re: sounder not reading.

It sounds to me like the transducer is set either a fraction too high or not angled slightly forwards. From your description it gives me the idea you are getting bubbles travelling over the surface of the transducer whilst underway but not at rest.
My hull is aluminium and my transducer face is a full 12mm below the surface of the hull and it is angled forwards about 5 to 8 degrees. A transducer mounted the same angle as the hull can have bubbles from disturbances travelling over it giving no readings whilst underway.

My sounder reads well at 25 knots these days after setting it a bit deeper than what the recommendations from the manufacturers are. The risk is damage to the transducer from hitting foreign objects, would rather a clean reading than the off chance of transducer replacement.

My understanding is Crew Marine closed shop at Redcliffe to avoid going bust. I think they pulled the business back to thier main grounds up the coast at either Caloundra or Bundaberg, I think they come from.
