Just bought a new sounder (Humminbird Matrix 12) and the instruction manual mentions that for a clockwise prop you should install on the starboard side of the transom for less turbulence. The previous sounder was on the port side and in the interests of fewer holes in the transom etc I'd prefer to put the new sounder on the same side as I can reuse a couple of the holes and patch the others, the starboard side is still a virgin. Is there really that much difference from one side of the prop to the other?
I don't think it makes a great difference mate, others might disagree, but I've had mine on both sides and had no drama. I had same situation, port side had the right holes already, so there it went.
Geoff, The main difference may not be in the performance of the transducer but the cavitation the tranducer can cause on that side. It may be ok depending how close it is to the keel centre and the prop.
Its only what I have read on this site and been told by our local electronics installer. On that side it is presumed to draw in the disturbed water to the prop on some boats. Just try it first as all may be ok.
cool.. well the last transducer was a big ugly wedge shape and this one is streamlined goodness so we'll see what happens!! thanks for the info that sounds quite plausible
