    Surface Bassin'

A good mate of mine has been making some really nice timber lures. He mostly fishes the salt, and has been braining pelagics, GT's etc on his Indo surfing/fishing trips, with his trolling lures and poppers.

He asked me a few weeks ago about lures for bass, and i put in a request for some surface stickbaits. I showed him my fav lure, which is now discontinued. and asked him to do his version of it. Basically a stick bait that is a little shorter and thicker in profile, more cigar rather than pencil shaped. And for it to sit flat, rather than tail down at rest.

He popped around this arv with some prototypes, and we went out for a dusk flick. They need some fine tuning, but for first drafts they performed great. Only stayed connected to the one fish, but had plenty of other interest.

He was pretty stoked with how feisty bass are, as he really didn't rate fresh water fishing. Now he's frothing to make more lures, and get out and nail a few bass. Gotta love surface bassin'.

Don't talk about Mondy, that place is my bogey dam. Ate humble pie (ie donut) again .

As for the lures. I can't really take the liberty of naming them, my mate refers to them as "Poo stix".

Will probs give them a go again tmrw morn.

Nice Bass Tiges, do you know what timber he uses for them? Ive made some bigger stick baits out of hardwood dowel but thats as far as I have gone.

    Cheers, Mick.

Thanks Mick. Not sure about the timber, forgot to ask. Think it may be white beech.

He certainly makes a nice looking lure Tiges. I'm making a similar one myself...the only difference is that I have no idea and it will most likely be a dismal failure
If he ever gets a run of those happening give us a hoy, I wouldn't mind a few in my bass box.

Those plugs look alright Tim. Nice fish too.
I saw a dead toga there last week, about 60cm.
Hope it was from a mishandling occurance rather than something more sinister.
How's the dam been fishing generally?

Hey Little Grey Bloke, I'm sure your attempt will work. Especially if it's a walk the dog/stickbait type lure. As far as lures go, they are probably the easiest to make. I've made a few that worked fine, but I'm too impatient to put the attention to detail to the finish that my mate did. I'll see if I can get my hands on some extra ones if he wants to sell a few.

Shame about the toga Jeff, especially since there really isn't that many in there.

I'll send ya a PM when I get the chance mate .

Cool good on you and your'e mate. Why don't you like the ones that sit ass down in the water? I find a better hookup rate with them. Ben

Thanks Ben. A lot of people prefer the tail down ones. Depends on how your fishing them. I don't mind them when using more of constant walk, with more water coverage between the pauses. But like the horizontal rest when I'm trying to stay close to a strike zone (snag/weed edge). You can do 2 or 3 tweaks, and stay basically in the same spot. And achieve 180 deg turns from the first twitch.

Gave them a run again this arvo, and they performed well. Picked up a couple more small bass, and a small toga.

Very nice, A more subtle aproach needed where you are fishing by the sounds. Might give it a go in one of my spots where the same thing is required,If i can find one that has the same horizontal float. Ben
