What's the rationale behind very few sounders coming with speed sensors these days? I am looking for a reasonably priced (~$300 would be ideal) sounder and we want it for 3 things:
1) depth
2) speed
3) finding fish
The only one I've managed to find that comes with a speed sensor is the Northstar 443sp ($299 at whitworths). Still have yet to find out whether that comes with a transducer + paddle wheel all in one unit or separate units (which means more drilling into the transom, yuck). All the other units have "optional" speed sensor which is either a separate transom mount (yuck) or GPS based.
sure.. but paddle wheel is cheap to make, accurate enough at slow speeds to obey no-wake zones or set your trolling speed, and it's better than nothing!! GPS receivers seem to be another couple of hundred bucks!
I just purchased from the states a Humminbird Matrix 12 and the speed sensor ( paddle wheel type ) inc delivery 5 days ship for AUS $ 265.00. There just a mono LCD screen but a nice size display.
Shoot me a PM if you like and i will provide you the sellers contact details who by the way accepts Paypal.
