Thread: Help needed with navionics card (please!)

Re: Help needed with navionics card (please!)

I've sent it to them to have a look at it. They said that often a file gets corrupted and they can fix that OK for nix, or worse case scenario if it is totally buggered they will rejig it for the cost of an upgrade.

I tried the card in both units I have and same in both.

As I said I never attempted to copy it but I did put it in the card reader to see if I could read it on my PC, they say that this is all you need to do...

I can only repeat what they tell me, I have no idea.
    Cheers

Re: Help needed with navionics card (please!)

I have to say that Navionics in Sydney have been very helpful.

Yes, at the end of the day they maintain that I wrecked the card in a card reader and I do have to accept that. However their attitude was friendly and helpful, even to the point of taking my side and disagreeing with a company policy that has been handed to them from head office in Italy and which they are unable to change, and unhappy about copping all the flack that it entails.

They have replaced the card for a new one the old upgrade cost of $110 and paid the express freight, and I also get the latest version too.

I guess I am happy, but I think the advice here is that unless you are a programmer then keep yours out of the home PC.

    Cheers

    Nice attitude Chris.
No one likes to fork out $$$ when it seems unnecessary, but all in all a good result.

I deal wih Navionics all the time and have always found them above exceptional to deal with.

    Cheers

The navionics program uses the standard windows library calls CreateFile and ReadFile just like I would when writing software.

The only difference with using the navionics card reader is that it enables their software to read of the unique serial number of the card. You cannot do this with a normal card reader. Navionics use the unique serial number to encrypt the chart, hence the reason you cannot copy it to another card.
Put my nav. gold card in my lappy plenty of times, no issue...as stated above, if you are told otherwise, you are being told porkies

there is a known issue with some operating systems with some demountable drives....that if you do not follow correct procedures when demounting......damage and corruption can occur to the drive........this includeds any of the media cards or pen drives.........why should it be so............ask microsoft.

so if you are going to plug your mapping card into your computer.......make sure the computer is not trying to read or write to it at the time you plug it in or pull it out.

the safest option is to insert the card before opening the application and close down the application including any file manager programe that may try to access the card.....before pulling it out.

    cheers

Of course it's a porkie. In verybasic terms a GPS unit in a boat is not a lot more than a card reader. What else happens?

The unit reads whats on the card (the map) displays this, and overlays the gps points and usually your gps co-ordinates are saved to the unit's internal memory.

just a point, why can Navionics have so much success with anti -tamper software in their cards by supposedly rendering them useless if placed in a card reader or copied but large companies who produce movies ,software and music and also including Microsoft can't stop pirating
