what are your thoughts with having changes to sizes sent out with boat rego renewal ?

With all the changes we see with areas we fish and size and bag limits it can often be confusing and as we have seen with Groper gate some people are plain ignorenant.
A friend and were discussing our registration and insurance and all the money we pay just to keep our boats to do a sport we love.
We discussed how easy it would be for the DPI or EPA to place alerts in new registrations sent out or simply send one out to all those with a registered water craft.
This is done with the change of road rules so why cnt it be done for rec frishing ?

It is our responsability to know the changes but this is another way it could be insituted ?

I get the message pretty well up here by radio that the government has heaps of roadworks happening...possibly more than ever before....I think they carry that message on the back of a quasi community announcement telling people to be careful around roadworks.... but I forget

What would the state government then do with all the spam they include in the rego renewals?

The ignorance is no excuse worked once when all the regulations one had to adhere to over and above just simple common sense was but a few...today with encyclopaedic volumes of the stuff.

A solid textbook in the case of fishery regs as per the act and boating regs included ....just the postage would kill their interest afteral every single fine issued is a boost to treasury coffers that they cannot do without.

Just a small slip of paper with size changes would work but it will be an anti revenue making proposition.

    cheers fnq

I agree with FNQ, they won;t do it, because then they will lose a revenue stream, something they can't afford to do, Bligh blew all our dollars on her Botox and now we have to pay it back, pity the slag didn't get infected with botulism and die.

It is a good idea, but I won't be alive the day it happens, I mean, in all the time the GBRMPA green zones have been in force, I have never recieved anything in the post, be it with boat rego, or anything else telling me about them. There excuse?? "the GBRMPA is federal" yeah, well last time I checked so was the Bruce Highway, but I still have to pay the Qld govt car rego to use it, as well as any fines I may incur when using it.

And there's nothing confusing about the Groper issue, they've been no take for at least the last 8 years I've been living here, if people haven't got it through their skull yet they never will.

Thanks fella's well there is years of revenue raising going on and alot of boat owners, there are no pot holes out there that need repairing and if they could i wish they bloody went out this week so i could do some bloody fishing
I havent seen to much of the promissed work going on with boat ramps of late and yes for most of us with common sense we check for changes to boat regs and fishing limits etc , and Yes Groper have been protected for sometime , in fact i though it was far greater than 8 years but i am possibly wrong on that?

A simple slip in the post " Here are the new sizes limits" ? If this couldnt be done our boat rego is not clearly identified to were it is going , we know with Roads it goes into constant repairs and upgrades etc.

Anyway just abit of a thought .

    Cheers Mick

I'm not sure how long the groper has been a no take species, but I've only been in Qld for 8 years, so they've been on there for at least that long, I think it may have been late 70's early 80's that they were put on the no take list

    Mick,

This very option / idea was brought to the attention of the DPI&F at several meetings in recent times.

Bridgette Kerrigan has been made aware of this as well and hopefully will take this idea on board.

They can manage to put in other junk with rego renewells, why can't they include a copy of the latest fishing regulations with boat rego renewell. The best way to get people to adhere to rules is to educate them and this would be a excellent way to educate people. As Phill says, the DPI are aware of this but that does not mean they are going to do anything about it. It would seem commonsense but government departments are not renowned for this.

    Thanks Phil,
Yeh am sure its not a new idea and am happy to here you guys are onto it, perhap i should be more involved with you guys but you know the deal..

I guess our thoughts just started rolling in regards to other changes /suggestion of change on the horizon it would be helpfull if this was distributed as would occur if road rules changed, not everyone has access to websites although its uncommon these days.

well hopefully phil you ca give some feedback down the track.

    regards

    Guys,

I understand that Queensland Transport post out the boat rego renewals and would include a brochure on any changes to fishing regs if Fisheries supplied the brochure. Surveys have been conducted in the past and have found that only a small percentage of boat owners read the swag of other info included in the envelope containing the boat rego renewal notice.

The cost effectiveness is questionable particularly as funding is tight in all State Govt. Departments.

    Cheers

People probably don't read the enclosed brochures because they're just...how can I put this nicely......CRAP.
If something worthwhile was in it then it might get looked at.
If they can include a brochure from DERM about the Moreton Bay Marine park then they can bung a size and bag limit guide in in my books.
All about big noting themselves whilst trying to justify their existence and nothing to do with educating people of new regulations.
I intend on living for-ever....so far so good
