I was out on the river last night hunting Jacks and I could hear splashing sounds in the general area I was fishing. At first I thought it was mullet jumping but after a few minutes realised it was fish feeding on the surface. I couldn't see bait jumping or breaking the surface so I tied on a "walk the dog" style lure and connected with a bigeye trevally with my first cast. I had another couple of swirls at my lure over the next several casts, and then no further interest.
As I moved further up river I could see that trevally were working something near the surface wherever I went. There must thousands of them in the river at the moment!
I had a go for another couple of hours casting with several different lures for just one more bigeye, again on the same w.t.d. lure.
My question to all the more experienced ausfishers is what do you think the schools of trevally were feeding on? There were no noticeable signs of bait boiling on the surface or bait jumping - just trevally hitting something on or near the surface.
