Spinning Style Reel for Live Baiting

Looking for a good spinning style reel for live baiting for my wife.

I use a Daiwa Saltist on a Rapala Braid Concept rod, but wife has trouble casting live baits on this style of reel.

Most of our fishing these days is in northern waters, where we are targeting Barra, Jacks, Fingermark (Golden Snapper), Threadies and the like. I'm after a reel that will handle the heavy workout some of these fish can give and will carry at least 150m (prefer more) of 30 lb braid.

The Shimano Baitrunner has got my attention, but other than info on the net, I'm not familiar with them. My understanding is that the D seris is the top of the range, with the B Series being below that.

I'm figuring one of these would probably suit my needs:
    8000D
    6000D
    6500B

Anyone familiar with these reels and give some guidance on suitability for my needs. Also any other reels I should consider.

    Thanks

Mate a baitrunner is ideal for the fishos who cant cast baitcasters while livebaiting.

I have a mate's mum who goes up the top end every year and live baits mullet for XOS barra up the Ord River. The baitrunner allows her to give line freely when the fish runs and simply turns the handle to engage the fighting drag which is pre-set. Simple.

I dont believe you need a 6500 sized baitrunner. I run a 3500 and can fit 250m of 30lb tuffline on it. I have knocked over my biggest jewie on it too at a bit over 50lb. The 6500 will be far too heavy and big. You could compromise with a 4500 if you wanted to beef it up a little.

However if your main concern is line capacity then the 3500 will hold plenty. The 3500 has a drag good enough to knock over the fish you will be catching!

I just came back from NT and was using spin gear in the 3000 range with no issues, only running 10lb braid!

yeah i would say the 6500 is way to big, but in the new range a 6 or 8000 would be fine, they are much smaller than the 6500b. as said even the 3500 will hold plenty of line and still has a great drag. cheers Lee

Just had a closer look. The new 4000D only weighs 385 grams and takes 219m of 4 kg mono, so should take at least 200 m of 30 lb braid. Looks a good reel and might make a nice Christmas present.

Its funny though, all the best barra guides live bait with baitrunners, yet never ever use the baitrunner feature. They simply favour these reels for their durability.

    Yeah that is weird???

If your dropping live mullet into pandanus trees and hook barra in real tiger country then i dont encourage the use of the baitrunner. But in other scenarios is a reel in strike better for hook up rates or better in baitrunner mode when the fish has had a chance to shallow the bait??

    Interesting scenario
