    Barra "The Summer ahead"

    Hi all

Some good stuff has been written / filmed about reading water in our impoundments - The talk of current flows or wind blown shores all help in obtaining better results. As we know transition / demarcation lines are formed on those muddy banks which are then used as ambush areas by barra - wind lanes are formed (which attract bait & barra) ........ Yes when the wind is blowing, life is much easier - if you are able to identify the signs.

OK .... now what about when we hit those periods of benign weather where we see little / no wind , hot conditions , rapidly rising water temps ........ better off being in a aircon apartment somewhere but what if we want to still try to catch barra. Night fishing can be great for those keen enough & sunset / sunrise often produce results.
Daylight hours ........ what do we look for ( shaded areas - lilly pads)
If we knew what the winds were doing before hand - Is it worth going to the lee side of the dam where we could have seen warmer surface water replaced by cooler water. ..... What are the barras priorities ( food & comfort +.... ?????)
Deep water & thermoclines - We certainly look for what areas the birds may be located.
Wind lanes or the remnants of ..... will often hold bait.

Its all interesting & I'll certainly be trying to learn if I encounter these benign days this summer.

What are your thoughts or experiences.

    Cheers

    Chris

Chris I am pretty hopeless at reading and interpreting the weather signs correctly unfortunately. Its fascinating stuff but I need the idiots manual on it. I am getting better though at reading my sounder images and in summer the barra do seem to hold deeper in spots. I have had success with plastics down deep and this is something I would be trying and working on more. - Richard

One thing worth mentioning Chris, is that in summer we don't really get a lot of "benign" days. You can expect pretty consistent NE'ers during spring, with the occasional, usually short lived Sth change. Then come the height of summer, when the big high pressure systems move further S and out into the Tasman, the SE trades can become relentless. Especially as you go further N.

I doubt you'll see a string of becalmed, hot days during summer. And will still be able to identify area's where previous/prevailing conditions are suitable.

Very true tiges. Our calm winter days are now over again.Several more weeks of winds from the NE NW.The odd SE to SW.Then the big highs move down into the Great Australian Bight and the SE starts. The odd calm day for sure during summer. But as a rule the windy months are on there way. This has been a great year for good boating weather in CQ so far.Not sure it can last much longer.

    Thanks Tiges & Squidda

Cant argue with you about prevailing conditions during the warmer months ...... Though as we know , you can still encounter those calm oppressive days - I certainly have ( Faust , Awoonga & Monduran) ....... & these days are tough fishing wise & both physically / mentally.

    Cheers
