Garrett recieves Qld Government report on Traveston dam

Hi,

As you may have heard, today the Qld Coordinator General's report regarding Traveston Crossing dam was released and sent to Peter Garrett.

It says there will be negligible social, economic and environmental impacts!

It has 1200 conditions, but no plan for implementing them!

There's something that you can do RIGHT NOW to kick off the next phase of the Save the Mary campaign... contact Peter Garrett IMMEDIATELY and ask him for a public comment period before he makes any decisions.

Comments: I am a keen angler & have been involved in the recreational fishing industry for over 20 years. I moved to Hervey Bay 3 years ago to enjoy the climate , lifestyle & fishing. Damming the Mary River with have a HUGE detrimental effect to the river & Great Sandy Straights. There are so many examples with clear evidence of what damming a system of this size will do all over the world ! Many today are actually being removed - based on the evidence of what we now know from experience ! I have always been a supporter of your music & what you have stood for previously. I can not believe that you would even consider proceeding with this dam based on the clear evidence of what will happen if you do ! Please say NO - to the Traviston Dam !

I have lived in Queensland all my life and was born in the Mary Valley but moved to Brisbane when I was 4. SEQ water supply was adequate with the Somerset Dam and in the early 80's the Wivenhoe Dam was built as a flood mitigation dam (not a catchment dam). Then all these buggars started to move up here from down south over the past 30 years which placed enormous pressure on our infrastructure.

Successive State Government did nothing to upgrade infrastructure and have put off the hard decisions for political expediancy.

The life style in SEQ is nearly like Sydney with roads clogged, traffic lights at every intersection, water restrictions and soon fishing restrictions.

We can't send the mexicans back down south (hey Scott) so we have no alternative but to build a catchment dam to supply water for now and into the future.

This catchment dam can only be built at Beaudesert or at the favoured spot in the Mary River Valley.

A few thousand people will be affected and will have to adjust their lifestyles for the good of the millions of others.

The last time I voted we were a democracy where decisions are made to benefit the majority.

All my ancestors on my mother's side are from Brisbane. But because of the multitudes of Qld country folk that flooded into Brisbane in the 'great depression' it buggared up the employment situation, so they moved down to Sydney. History always repeats itself...I should add, thank god they did otherwise I would have ended up being born a cane toad smuggler.

It's not just the people effected by the flood area Barry - what about the Mary river & Great Sandy Straights !

So your not worried about the impacts that it will have on our fishing in this region

I am starting to fully realise why Qld's fisheries are in the condition they're in the longer I watch these boards

I have to question what will happen in the sandy straights if the dam is build. We have all seen the effect of silting in moreton bay and a lot of the older and wiser folk out there say the lack of a decent flood contributes to it. I would not mind betting that wivenhoe contributes to the silting...

I have also read that it is a stupid place to put a dam, simply because the design allows for a large amount of evaporation. I beleive the beaudesert location is better for this, but will it get the same amount of rain as the mary river catchment?

I don't know your full meaning for the sentence highlited in bold above but it appears that after 3 years living at Hervey Bay you consider yourself an expert on managing Queensland's Fisheries as well as an expert on marine ecosystems.

You should come along to the next RRFF working group meeting as an observer and maybe you will learn a thing or two. If you are interested I will mention this to Fisheries staff.

Barry - I am no expert on fisheries management - never claimed to be. I have fished extensively for over 35 years & been directly involved in the fishing tackle & marine industry for over 20. I will always endeavour to get my facts straight first & never afraid to voice "my" opinion.

As far as marine ecosystems - There is no shortage of environmental impact studies/research on what damming large rivers systems will do to those systems & surrounding marine environments

I have committed to joining the local Sunfish branch & will attend my 1st general meeting on the 19th of this month. I am happy to offer my opinion to any one that's asks & have already worked with DPI&F through the SIPS system/workshops & as president of the Fraser Coast Fish Stocking Association. I also attended a number local public consultation meetings since being in the bay.

No disrespect directed towards you Barry - Just my opinion on Traveston based on what I believe to be plenty of reasons NOT to go ahead with it. I believe approx 1200 special conditions to be complied with ?
