Hi, I am looking into buying a reel or 2 from the US. First of all they are alot cheaper then they are here, even with postage it will be alot cheaper. So just wondering has anyone done this and what was your experience.
I am looking at a shimano stradic so if I brought it from the US would it be the exact same reel I am getting from a local shop in Australia. Also would I get the shimano 10yr warranty?

You will have a 10 year warranty in the USA, but its not vaild here in Aussie, i've also gone down the path of buying overseas, not usa as it was cheaper to buy it from NZ. here is a link of my old post.

i didn't worry about not having the warranty as its quite cheap to send it back, it should be the same model in the US, normally you will find that the Japan market reels are different. not 100% on that though.

I've pulled a couple of nice Shimanos from Japan in the past - a Tyrnos 30 II and a TLD 30 II, both from Shimreels. They were slightly above half price of Australian reels, including freight.
Warranty aside, I think we SHOULD buy this stuff overseas, to try and make the local distributors play the game.

it would appear that the Stradic is cheaper from Mo tackle than buying from NZ. so there is no point, maybe USA is the way to go, I just got a load of Tackle from Mo tackle and it was well priced, remember if you find a reel advertised on the web else where, they will match it and give you 10% off any tackle you buy.

I have to agree with Timiboy, i did notice on on an customs invoice from my stella 5000 that cost price was $ 519NZ (i think from memory) so the guys in australia are maybe getting them for around $450 AUD and then marking them up to $1000 dollars, which i think is a bit much.

Bought a 6500B baitrunner from cabelas. Took 2 weeks to deliver and cost with freight about $160. this was when the Aussie dollar was at 98c.

I have bourght a fair few reels from US ebay....a few of the fishing shops in the US sell stuff via ebay....I recently bought a Certate 4000 and the seller had 'Make an offer" I put in half the price that they were asking and they accepted - not so many people buying expensive reels over there and must have wanted the sale.....including postage worked out to be just over half the price (Aus$) as per stores in Aus....
Postage generally takes about 2 weeks and are protected by PayPal if you pay this way....
Do your research and make sure you get the best price....
would be the only way i would go by buying reels from overseas.warranty side........dont even bother me as you can get parts here anyway.
interesting how, when dollar dropped all prices went up straight away, dollar now 90c and nothing has changed price wise locally.
I bought a Curado E7 off US ebay, was here in under a week and with the postage was $200. Saved $130 and am in the process of getting another reel. Japan at the moment is not as attractive price wise. I think it is more a case of the US struggling than Australia doing great.

When the dollar is strong I buy and sell a few reels from US.
I also get certain gear for mates/family.
Im lucky enough to have sourced a shimano wholesaler from the US, now depending on the Aus$ makes for a significant savings. often up to 50%.
The biggest Issue is postage. I find you really need to bring in 4-5 reels to make it worth while.
I have also bought a few reels off US ebay, if you know a mate who wants a new reel maybe get 2 and halve the postage.
Granted you wont have warranty in Aus for your gear, but honestly when was the last time you took back some shimano/diawa gear?
And if somthing does go wrong you can often fix it and still come out ontop.
Spot on. I was told Daiwa Aust had priced this years gear assuming an aussie dollar of around US 75 cents. They did cop a hiding when the dollar fell lower than that but it was for a relatively small amount of time. With the aussie dollar now strong again and well above their average assumed level we should expect some price drops. I have also just ordered some lures from Hawaii. Over here they cost $30 plus. Just got 3 Shimano reels from the USA.
Symetre FJ 2500 - $75 AUS
Saros 2500 - $100 AUS
Stradic Fi 2500 - $160 AUS
The tackle shop that i bought them from only charged me $60 AUS postage (including insurance).
Also said that if i had any problems that all i had to do was email him and he would send the reel back and post in back to me in AUS for free.
Jump on ebay, some great US dealer on there.

My mate and I are considering bringing over a couple of pflueger reels from the US... They're quite a bit cheaper over there.
I've bought 4 reels from the USA. Freight on average is AU$45 per reel each time. Always arrive in under 7 working days, brand new in box. Look on US Ebay and there is usually a seller selling the model you want with cheap intl freight. They do it all day, every day.
We get ripped off in Australia on all consumables. Big island in the middle of the pacific syndrome.
