    Plane travel with fishing line

A recent plane trip from QLD to NSW and return turned up a surprise. You can carry fishing line in your carry on luggage from QLD to NSW, but not coming back. I ended up having to donate about 100m of 30lb braid at the security check through.. Apparently the rules are different from state to state I would have been really snakey if it was a full roll (600m).

Otherwise, I have been dupped and there is an airport security guy at Newcastle pretty pleased with his effort.

Strange thing was, the missus goes straight through with nail scissors in her bag????

Just thought I should give the heads up, so you don't lose a full roll.

Re: Plane travel with fishing line

Did they give any reason why??

I might be able to understand the carriage of wet line (free loading, nasty micro-organisms that act like small carp been present in NSW) but not dry line.
That's the reason why they don't allow wet fishing lines on mass carriers throughout Europe.

Maybe you should have posted your reel back.

Apollo - ring the security firm that confiscated your property and find out what happened to your line

I would have assumed that any "dangerous object" would have been forwarded to the destination and returned to the owner at the airport. You should have been given a receipt anyway

They also should have video/ records of the event

Also why not call the Federal cops at the airport about the incident as I think you got had

I would think it could be used to strangle someone i was surprised that my daughter was allowed to carry a guitar in a soft case as carry on luggage as well i told her she would not be able to due to the strings could be used as a garrot (spelling) to strangle someone however at checkin she was told no worries it is a soft case but hard case covers had to go in the hold go figure

Re: Plane travel with fishing line

A few months ago I travelled to Townsville for the day for a meeting. I had time to spare before the returning flight so I stopped into the local BCF store up there. Found they had some very good specials on hooks and lures , so stupid me without even thinking bought some (only had carry on luggage). Got to security checkpoint and had to pay an extra $25 to put them in stow away luggage. Thought I'd bought myself a bargain but ended up costing me more after the additonal cost at the airport ....Can understand their point, just wished I had put a bit more thought in before I bought them....Matt

So do I have to take the laces out of my work boots before I board a plane now??

Lucky I don't wear neck ties and my Hard Yakka's don't need a belt....because ties and belts might be next on the hit list.
    Gees...when is it gunna end

What about the cord on my mouse or charger in the laptop case??

Or I could stab someone with the biro or brain them with the Nokia or....

Re: Plane travel with fishing line

I know how frustrating it can be, had to go through the security check twice (taking workboots off and on each time) and put my carry on luggage in with regular luggage because of 500mm of electrical cable in my bag.

The flight was only from Brisbane to Bundaberg...

Re: Plane travel with fishing line

I thought i was only illegal to carry it on board if you also carried a nail file.

The official reason is the nail file can be used to cut the Bunnings brand silicone around the edge of a window which can then be popped out, the line can then be fed outside of the plane and into an engine...this because of the wonderful characteristics of todays new braids will tie the engine up in knots and put the entire plane at risk, makes total sense to me after all you cannot be too careful these days as the potential for danger simply lurks everywhere.....as does the reaction to it (regulated or not).........

Re: Plane travel with fishing line

I recently had some reels , with line on them in my carry on bag, both ways, QLD to NSW with no worries at all, kind of strange huh? also took a speargun once (but well before 911 and terrorists times) with no problems, it was one of those small compressed air ones and would certainly be classed as a weapon these days!

Re: Plane travel with fishing line

They sell you cans of beer and soft drink in aluminium cans. They can be fashioned into a cutting implement for the window silicon or someone's throat. They also give you a metal knife to eat your dinner with. I can't see why they ban some things and yet supply others.

I think you have been had as far as the fishing line goes.

Hi Finga i know where you are coming from i just think a guitar string would be more deadly than a nail file or a neck tie or shoe laces,so if they ban nail files why not guitar strings personaly i thinkit is a lot of crap if they want to do something they will find a way, i have been to the airport 3 times in 6 months to either drop my daughter off or others and i am the one that gets pick for drug and firearms swabs and screening and i am not even flying
go figure that one i don't even smoke lol

Re: Plane travel with fishing line

    Apollo,

I think most people agree that you have been had with the security person at the airport. I too have commuted by air from Newcastle (next door to the RAAF base at Williamtown) which is a misnomer as it's outside the city of Newcastle, more like Meadowie, to Brisbane on a few occasions and never had that problem.

Then again my fishing lines were in my travel bag that went into general luggage, it went through X-ray scanners , it was never questioned.

If I was you I'd write back to the Officer in Charge - Passenger Security at Newcastle Airport with time and date of incident raising the issue with them to investigate it.

If you still have your airline flight ticket, check the conditions of the fine print on the back and also raise this with the airline involved, it would probably be open to interpretation, not all is black and white but sometimes shades of grey if you get my meaning.

You have a good case for compensation.

Re: Plane travel with fishing line

like most people here i think you have been had champ.

twice in the last three years i have been through the u.s. and returned with a carry on bag full of fishing goodies, including g.p.s., reels and a lot of line, braid and mono. i took all this in carry on to make sure it all got home with me.

im not to sure why, but at every airport in the states, we visited 14 in the last two trips, we have been subjected to the full search. so most of these searches the security/ customs/ gunslingers have all seen the line and i have never had a problem.

having said that though, last trip we got to auckland to be pulled up by the uniform for having a 8 inch corkscrew in our carry on bag we had forgotten about from our first stop in san francisco. that bag with the corkscrew had been through LAX, vegas, miami, JFK and san francisco airports without being picked up. the uniform at auckland was not surprised, telling us it happens quite often.

just about every item you take on board could be made into a weapon of some description so where they draw the line im not sure.

as said, i would be making a call.
