The Barra "Scene"

Heres my thoughts on the "scene". When I first picked up a baitcaster, and tied on a hard bod, my mate gave me a heads up on the "scene". Nah, I said, surely we are all out just to catch a fish and enjoy!
More time I spend on the water, or yakking about barra, the more naive I am proven.

The "Pros"

Universally despised for their fast, loud boats, colorfull shirts, and apparent lack of fishing ettiquette.

The "Guides"

Common targets for blow flies, hanger ons and hero worshipers.

The "Quiet Acheivers"

Good luck to you, best of all worlds. Silence is certainly golden.

The Newbs

Refer "The Pros", but usually in a slower boat.

The Lurkers

Know everything, give nothing, but quick with an opinion.

The Trollers

Universally despised by the casters.

The Casters

Universally despised by the meatos

The Meatos

Universally despised by all

The Illegal Netters

Hero worshipped by the meatos.

The Industry

tell you anything to sell their product, which generally isnt up to scratch anyways.

*Considered way behind other more learner-ed fisheries.

*Predominantly non local - travelling anglers ..... weekends away.

*Generally despise meatoes & praise C&R
*Tolerate trollers ( under certain circumstances ie : Having a beer moving to the next destination).
*Will migrate to other impoundments for a gathering.

*Always welcoming & willing to lend a hand

I think there is another catagory that should be included....and that is The "Sneaker", Known to do a Teflon to his or her favourite impoundment, surprising all with an unexpected report......noice thread lads....I become emotional reading some of that

I believe you may have missed one fine point regarding some guides.

Guides aren't always the better fisherman/angler contrary to popular belief, but they are generally good salespeople.

Too right 2ML ...... I've certainly experienced examples where guides / skippers were pretty ordinary ........ & every now & then hear of horror stories .
Fortunately the impoundments that I have exposure to are well served with good / excellent ones ........
I will say though that some of these guides are pretty ordinary when it comes to on water etiquette toward other fishoes - Arrogance or Oblivious to anyone else ..... an attitude of "I'm blah blah & I'm going to mooch into your spot or drive full noise past someone who is trying to fish a location. Poor form that

Well said Chris i agree, (Good reply) i think we do have some good impoundment guides as well.

Funny topic Brian, the headings had me laughing, nice work.


I remember i could see a guide (good bloke) and taylors down the bay, and where i was fishing i had a 100km/hr circus going on every 30 mins, the brakes put on hard about 40m away and waves slapping our hull everytime when we were anchored up. My 65 year old fishing mate said to me " What the hell is going on up here on your dams mate"

I had no answer. Just shrugged my shoulders embarrased at exposing him to this stuff as he travelled a long way to fish with me. His wife back at camp was not impressed either and i got the feeling they would never be back, a shame as our lakes are magical places to be.

I got off the lake and the guide who was a km away said.
"What the hell was going on over there bloody hell that was terrible form".

I had no answer.

Thankfully i think this doesnt' happen all the time.
Guides on impoundments in my opinion have provided more info and helped more in increasing our thoughts on barramundi than most.

I would recommend not buying that extra rod and reel per year and going out with a guide, any guide should give you some tips we never had before hand.
Do your research, pick a guide and have fun.

2many yep all guides aren't the same as Weipa Dave Donald says in his ads in mags.

Same goes for social fisho's and tournos.

Salespeople: Does putting yourself on covers of mags, not printing a barra tip for 18 months mean salespeople?

On the net i've seen some provide 20 000 free words on barra, you only have to read reports to see how much this has helped people. I think this is a good thing, as if it wasn't done we would all be talking about not fishing in winter, chasing hot water, casting hard bodies and so on.

Lots of ways to measure who is better. If it was the main aim of guides i guess they would all be trying to prove this in comps, but not all are there so i don't think this a high priority for some

If you are fishing 2000 days getting reports from other guides on the same day, comp guys who fish 250 days a year (serious) then your quiet mates some of whom are fairly handy, i think it's easy to build up a picture of where everyone is at without having it printed in mags. If results are consistantly good across this cross section i would say yes some are better than others, but that's not the be all and end all.

As most of these guys smile when they hear of a new guy nobody has heard of doing well quietly going about his or her work, socially or in comps.

One of the best things I have ever done is spend some time with a couple of fly fishing guides in NZ & up the Snowy mountains

Aside from learning the all important stream craft ...... I was introduced to the etiquette behind flyfishing ..... Which pretty well gets you thinking about others ( ie giving someone space , not jumping in ahead (upstream) or if fishing a pool / run with others already there you ... you start at the tail......... never cross a stream ahead of others) All of this is really just good manners but it also transfers well into other forms of fishing .... .

Theres usually no mooching involved,always a lot of noise,hammer down y'know "Wham.Bam,Thank ya Mam" and then others who quietly enquire how you went and throw in a suggestion for next time(not always book me next time and I'll get you one).Another category should be; and they're everywhere in every sport/ pastime "The Poser" with there I'm the ducks nuts ,mentality.You see them on every boat ramp although they're usually good for a funny occurence.

I started fishing as a young bloke sitting on the river banks in the U.K and there is certainly a strict code.If someone is fishing your intended swim don't go a few yards either side and try to muscle in,be QUIET,fishing rivers the fish are right there and any vibration on the bank and their gone so no stamping about either. Unfortunately,the word RESPECT seems to be absent in life these days its now been replaced by ME,MINE,NOW.Sad but true.

i reckon boat should be called a fad ill let yous workout the rest and it aint fish i have seen some absolute ignorance and not just from flash fishing boat some of the ski fruternity have alot to learn about a 6 knots within 30 metres of another vessle i have yet to see one do that yet and i dont want to start a debate like the one they have started about 4 wheel drives in school zone because the vehicle whilst pilot by the human factor things will happen . i dreed they day we see a serious accident on the dams at night for starters of boat coming back to the ramp at highspeeds and no bloody lights or no time for the other vessel to react to there action . Any way i could go on for hours over this its only my opinion so may noit count for much .
