    Swirl marks from buffing

    Gday

I went over the boat with 3M restorer and wax polish and a lambswool pad on a rotary buffer.

I then followed this with Meguiars high gloss polish no.45 with the same lambswool pad on the rotary.

It came up fantastic however in bright light you can see swirl marks / holograms from the rotary......

Whats the best way to get these out? Was the lambswool pad too harsh to use with the high gloss polish?

Its just not my dad today!

Cheers in advance for any advise

    G'day

Yes.... the Lambswool was too harsh, use a foam finishing pad or foam hand applicator pad with the wax on top of the polish.

    Re: Swirl marks from buffing

Hand application of the polish never got the swirls out

So I guess I will have to try a foam buffing pad.....

Its the white ones that are used for finish right? or the black ones?

It needs to be harsh enough to get it out.

Do I need to go back to compounding all over again or will the high gloss polish be sufficient to get the swirls out?

    Cheers for your help

    Re: Swirl marks from buffing

you need a less aggressive compound on a softer pad, then wax.

    G'day

Color depends on manufacturer..... W7000 (red) is the one i use for cutting and a W9000 (cream) is a finishing pad... use that with the good wax. I'm talking about the meguiars system here. Just jump on their website, they should have a step by step process.

You need to use a black {fine& soft } pad with a swirl mark remover {3M make1
before you use a wax polish otherwise you are just filling the swirls with wax
    and they will return after the boat has been washed a few times. What speed was the buff doing whilst buffing {the slower the better creates less heat}
As this factor can also contribute to swirl marks and holograms

    Re: Swirl marks from buffing

When I was using the cutting compound the buffer was running at around 2000 - 2500 rpm. Which is what it recommended on back of the bottle.

Anyhow I purchased a black finishing pad and went over it with the meguiars high gloss polish and it seems to have taken most of the swirls out. Then I followed with wax.

I think no matter what I do that lambswool pad is going to leave swirl marks, funnily enough that pad is the recommended pad for use with the 3m compound. I had to run it at that speed simply because I was trying to remove the scratches left from wet sanding in some areas.

I will post on that forum though because it would be helpful to know how to avoid those swirl marks in the future

    Cheers for the help

here a link to a 3m how to finish gel coats , you see in page 2 step 2 you change pads to a finer grade wool pad or a foam polihing pad
