    GU Patrol 4.2 Turbo

Can anyone be give me some indication of the "life expectancy" of a 4.2 turbo diesel GU Patrol (2001). Mine is approaching 280,000 and still going strong. It is serviced religously every 5000k. I'm just a bit concerned that dramas may be just around the corner and would hate to find out towing the boat on the next trip north to Shark Bay. I realise that diesels are generally good for many more K's than mine has done, but this is the first turbo model I've owned, and I'm wondering what other owners have got out of theirs, trouble free. Any info greatly appreciated !
    Cheers, Taz.

Keep the cooling system in top condition as well on that model. They are generally a well known loong term vehicle.

At 280k injector pump and turbo are worth a solid inspection as is the clutch if you do not know it's history, the rest of the drive train is good enough to go past 500k.

Not counting typical and general wear and tear items ...you take your chances here ie i would expect the swivel hubs may need new bearings before then also 2 or more wheel bearings may need changing or a clutch slave, suspension bushes, alternator. waterpump etc etc

There is nothing like them commonly on the road anymore apart from in 5th gear, has yours already seen work here?

As GBC says above, I cannot stress enough the cooling system, if it never gets to overheat this engine can virtually go forever. Highly worth fitting an over temperature alarm.

another thing to check is the clutch fan for brittleness and cracking , if they let loose it becomes expensive as they take out hoses and wires along with the radiator ,

sit down when they tell you the price of them though , $200 + without the cllutch hub

    Thanks for the replies,
Swivel hub seals and bearings were done a couple of years ago, as were the gearbox bearings and synchro rings.
Fan appears to be in good nick, with no signs of being brittle, but that's something I'm now aware that I must keep an eye on.
FNQ, what did you mean by "There is nothing like them commonly on the road anymore apart from in 5th gear, has yours already seen work here?"
Basically what you have all indicated is that there is plenty of life left in the old girl if I keep up the maintenance.
And thanks Chimo for the PM.
    Cheers, Taz.

Taz 5th can be soft on the early GUs, cannot say if yours would be within those years I have forgotten now. The spline or teeth on 5th gear only has half the contact it should have due to a stuff up relegating it in strength to no better than a landcruiser box

BTW I was reading elsewhere a thread where a few td42s had done well over 1million km and where the steel head was removed for precautionary work at 600k but it didn't need any.

If these engines are given good oil at the right time, good air filters and never allowed to overheat (fit an alarm).....your engine is hardly run in.

    cheers fnq
