deep v hulls leaning into the breeze

hey lads, i went for a ride in a yalta craft 615 odessa today. It was blowing around 20kts and the boat punched through the slop beautifully, i was very impressed with the soft ride of this hull. The only blemish was when this hull was side on to the breeze it had a lean towards the breeze. Im guessing a set of trim tabs would sort this. Was wondering what experiences you guys have had with similar hulls behaving like this and did trim tabs sort the problem.

    cheers buca t

Had the same problem with my boat 5.6 Alutech, tried everything including fitting tabs. I found by having to drive a single tab trimmed in for the lean it straightened the boat up ok, but slowed it down 3-4 knots and used more fuel .

The tabs seem to drive the nose of the boat in more, just the same as if you were trimming in the motor. I usually only do this in rough weather for the bow to break the chop. In the end I took the tabs off and now I just even up the load by shifting passengers, eskies dive bottles etc.

My boat was leaning more on the port side and suffers from prop torque, but will also lean the other way in a strong wind.

For my boat it was 70-90kg, so one person swapping sides or sitting out wider will do it. Tabs will give what you want, but this is a cheap fix that should do most of the time. Its a CC so its easier for me to move a bit from one side or the other.

I had a 615 Odessa, a set of tabs will solve all the listing problems, bloody good boat by the way.

    Good luck with it.

cheers to mister and finding time for their useful post. Thanks for pointing out the gen y/ x info, i had to check with the mrs and apparently i just make the cut for gen y. Its good to see the elderly boys can still keep up with the modern lingo ( gen x/ y ect). Although you guys couldnt help me to much with this post ( still appretiate your input) im sure if i ever buy a model t ford or an fj holden to restore you guys will be able to assist with a wealth of knowledge as these vehicles were most possibly your first cars. Cheers again boys and i hope the viagra is workin well for ya.

I don't an Odessa, I have a trophy 6.5 mt , they are deep v at 19 degrees and weigh about 1700 kg without gear and fuel. They are not as stable as a moderate V at rest but they make up for it on the go, I come clean out of the water and hardly feel anything when she drops back in.
She is fitted with Lenso trim tabs, standard on all PRO models, anytime she lists a fraction ( strong current on wind) I pull the opposite side tab in very little and she corrects it. Never have any problem with the bow going low as you can always trim the engine up a little .
They work perfect on this boat but I don't use them to balance the boat because I have a huge load on one side, I load my boat equal.

OK, here goes my usual and very old whinge, why the hell are trim tabs not fitted from new?? I know the tired old cost argument thing, but they would be miles cheaper at manufacture time than a year later when you have been smashed down on one side untill you can't stand it anymore and do something about it. I liken it to cable V hydraulic steering, anything over (say) 5.5M should be mandatory to have hydraulic steering and trim tabs, FROM NEW! kind like a design rule for cars, it has to be there or you don't make/sell the boat!

Re: deep v hulls leaning into the breeze

As you are running, the wind tries to blow the nose of the boat downwind.

The leg is at the stern of the boat so the back of the boat is effectively anchored in position, but there is nothing stopping the nose from swinging away.

You aren't even aware of this happening but to return to your intended course you instead turn the boat slightly into the wind to counter this effect.

As you are now turning the boat using the engine, it will heel over in that direction as it does in any turn.

    Trim tabs counter this nicely.

Southports are factory fitted with integrated trim tabs ...
