How do you soften up heavy mono?

Ive got some schnieder 70lb mono that I put on a handline. Its got some serious line twist in it, cos the shop spool was so small. When I threw it out with some bait and a light sinker, the line was so coiled that I couldnt feel a bite in light current.

What should I do to make this line supple and straight?

    cheers

I've never had to do it for a handline, but with heavy mono cast nets they say if you want too soften it up for a wider spread, you need to soak it in soapy water overnight then wash the net properly and leave to dry. I would imagine this would work for heavy mono fishing line.

I work in the boating industry but also manufacture polyurethanes and epoxys, and from my experience with these chemicals i can tell you the worst thing for polyvinylidae fluroride or polyethelene lines is heat and UV. if exposed to heat the line will go through a post curing process and actually stiffen up. and obviously UV is not good.

When you soak the line perhaps start with luke warm water to help soften the material up first, post curing needs to be a sustained heat so don't worry about that.
Nothing makes a fish bigger than almost being caught.

I was told that he cast nets should be soaked in fabric softener. That might work on the mono

    Andrew,

To remove the twists is relatively simple. If you have access to a boat simply let all the line out behind the boat and with a little speed run the line through the water.

You may need to repeat this every know and again as handlines have a habit of twisting.

I think heavy handlines twist due to
    1. the large dia of the line is greatly affected by current(has a bigger effect than most think).
    2. if a large loose swivel in not attached the line tends to twist due to the heavy weights used to sound the bottom. The twist happens during the retreive.Water resistance again but on a larger scale due to the big sinker.
