rod holders / outriggers for billfish trolling (photos now)

Do rod holders for trolling need to be slanted back towards the back of the boat?

or are they ok sticking up vertically so long as the roller tip is facing the right direction?

is there an advantage for lure action etc if the rod tip is lower?

hard to get them laying down in the classic position in my boat

need to get a proper rod holder / rigger set up within the constraints of my boat

They will be ok; the 30 degree angle is better mainly when the line is coming off, because of the acute angle at the tip of the rod. If you are running diving lures, swim baits the lower rod tip the better or skirted lures, skip baits the higher the better. If you want to get your line closer to the water use a flat line clip to lower the tow point.

I want to troll skirted lures mostly for billfish, but will run hard bodies periodically for wahoo and mackeral.

I have one rod holder at each side of my bait board at 30 degrees.

also have a rod holder at each corner, that is vertical in line with the transom, but angled sideways out away from the boat by about 18" at the top of a 6 foot rod.

can I run the outside corner rods on riggers, and continue to run 2 rods off the bait board (ie, short and long corner but nor really on the corner), or is this all too close together?

Nice boat Mick..... I would say that the rods are to close, keep you short lines on the corners of the boat. And your other two I would put a set of rail mount stainless rod holders on the rails. If you dont have a set further up the gunwale and get set of out riggers on if you are serious about chasing billfish their worth every cent

with you lines being that close together the lines will be in the wash of the boat and are hard for the fish to see and you will get a much better action on your lure or bait

Mick those rod holders on the back corners you could get some ally pipe bent to the angles that you want and slot them into the rod holders
