    Blank for kid's beach rod

I was hoping the brains trust might be able to suggest a suitable blank for a kid's beach rod.

The girl it's destined for is 10 years old, so doesn't need something too weighty or powerful. Ideally:
    • 2 piece
    • 9' - 10'
    • spin configuration
    • mostly bait fishing
    • 12-15lb
    • on a budget
Was thinking about the Kilwell FSU4120/2 but it's a bigger diameter down low than I expected, and probably too chunky for little hands.

A mate suggested I look for "salmon light" or "mag bream", but I'm not sure they're current generation options. Happy to be schooled though.

    Any ideas?

mate....get a wilson shoreline 2pc. 10'6", light as and will handle anything a 10 year old can handle. its a glass blank so will take some abuse, will set you back about $130. Mag bream would be perfect, but from memory are getting close to the $200 mark, and are a composite blank so a little care is necessary. All still available...and have been on the market for years...a sign of their quality. Give wilsons a ring for your local stockists (they are a great company to deal with....they sell both). I have both......the shoreline in four configs (2pce and 1 pce, medium and low mount)....my favourite light beach rods....and when the nieces or mum comes beach fishing....that what they use. FSU blanks are a fast taper blank and will always have a thick butt, and be too fast a taper for a youngster....better of with a medium/multi taper blank (like the shoreline). You can buy the blank if you want to build it yourself...but i wouldnt bother.

    Cheers

    Thanks Greg. Appreciate your insight.

I am after the blank ... the plan is for my mate to build it for his daughter (with some assistance). He could buy it complete, but there's some emotional investment in building (rather than purchasing factory built) a rod for someone near and dear.

Is the blank called "shoreline" too?

Re: Blank for kid's beach rod

I will check it out for you.....I hear where your coming from. I once built a custom 3kg overhead ugly stik for my brother for a birthday present......spent 60 hours on the butt wrap. (as a pro rod builder at the time......thats worth about $1200), the money wasnt the issue...its the thought that counts.
They are definitely available as a blank, as I used to build them for customers who wanted special builds.....the grey matter is just a bit fogged at the moment so i cant remember the blank designation. I will post this ASAP.

    Any recall Greg?

I wrote a letter to Wilson, seeing as I couldn't find an email address for them anywhere on the web, and they never took the time to reply. Gave them my email address in the letter to make it easy ... and, nothing.

Sounds like it could be the Wilson/Kilwell MT 4126.
About $55-60 for the blank, 10'6" long, multi-taper fibreglass blank, fast action, light as a feather. Perfect for whiting, bream, dart, choppers etc.
    Cheers.

thats the one Nigelr. and the two piece loses nothing to the one piece..just a couple of $ dearer. It would have to be my favourite all time light beach/rock rod.
