    Phill,

I run a 668 in my 5.5 sportfish with a disc type transducer on the transom .could you offer any advice on settings at speed , As all i seem to get is clutter, do you use auto cruise mode or in manual with gain backed off .

    cheers Craigo.

i see hardly anybody uses a scope.
i find it brilliant for identifying whats immediately under the transducer.

Re: My Furuno FCV620 Pictures of arches

The last five pictures are all the same thing right???

I would say that is not a fish rather a wreck or some other odd structure.

the pic in 12.2 metres is certainly a school of reasonable fish (reasonable, as in, not bait)

Re: My Furuno FCV620 Pictures of arches

My guess would be first pic: small patch of school whiting or similar small fish ( I used to catch school whiting for a living). Middle pic is a patch of bait, white bait or anchovies usually at this time of year. Last one is a bit more interesting could be a small patch of bait but looks a bit dense. Maybe a few larger fish together. If there were a few patchs like that it would be worth a fish there. That is my humble opinion. I am sure plenty would have other ideas.

The type of bottom you are on is flat smooth sand by the look. You would need more structure to have a serious chance of snapper

Whiting interesting i would near of thought they would come up on the sounder.Ill bekeeping an eye for them a lot more now. I don’t really target them...
So youthink the three from my old 620 might be fish on this page could be snapper???Or any of the pics from my old620??
Do you think a stingray or a banjo shark would come up like a blob or a arch likethe one in my any pics??? We get a lot of them in the Corio bay
I still have never soundered up snapper and them caught from my 620 or even now i have 585 in under 10mts or in 23mts in ppb..I must be doing something wrong..
Do you think i should use my 1kw in under 10mts of water or put it back to 600wt in under 10mts of water??
    Thanks heaps for your Help

    Salt Rat,

you will have to ensure that the surface of your round transducer is flat with whatever setup you have and not recessed. If it is proud by 1m or 2mm or so all the better. I am yet to personally see someone with a round transducer setup a bracket that is any good above 12-16 knots or so.

    Wreckonsandybottom.jpgStewy,
This isn't a particularly good pic. i don't take many. but it does show quite well how the sounder trail lenghtens when you are over harder bottom. Note that the depth doesn't change much.
If you look close on the left hand side you can see an area of hardness slowly rising as we approach the wreck. The wreck is almost completly silted over. So no change in depth. It still supports a good fish colony because there are areas to hide. It is exactly the same with a lot of areas in vic that have broken bottom. Lots of small rocks that don't change the depth but are picked up in the sounder trail. Many areas like this hold snapper but you won't see them unless they come out to feed. You can't see a fish if it is hiding beside a rock. So the best thing to do is look for the broken bottom and have a fish to see what is there. If you take a look at your sounder pic, it is flat even bottom no change in the trail, So most likely flat sandy bottom = a desert

Also on your pic you can see the much longer trails on the 50khz(left hand half of screen). This is due to the longer pulse length and wider beam angles used on 50 khz. Same applies though if looking for hard bottom set up so all the trail is visible and then look for changes in the trail.

Re: My Furuno FCV620 Pictures of arches

I have a trans mount 1kw.. so do you think i should keep it at 1kw in the 10mt and under water? or put it 600wt mode?

Ok so what your saying is look for broken bottom and use the bottom zoom to find the fish and hiding the broken bottom/rocks??

And do you think any of the marks are snapper???

    Thanks heaps..

Re: My Furuno FCV620 Pictures of arches

Post 60 and 63 have some larger fish in the pics I would have a fish on them and see what comes up. You can never tell for sure what fish you are looking at until you start catching them. How a fish shows depends on many things like tranducer beam angles and speed you pass over them. With a narrow beam such as a 1kw 200khz that you have if you are travelling forward at say 10-20km/hr then you will end up with little solid matchhead size targets. If you slow right down then they will become longer tagets as you ping them a few more times. If you use a wider beam angle such as on your 50khz then you will start to get solid arches. This is because you hit them many more times with a wider beam so you appear to have more larger fish. They arch because the range to them is greater when they enter the outer edge of the beam, the top of the arch is when you are directly over the top of them(shortest range).
Re changing to 600w in shallow I wouldn't. I would just cut back the gain, when you change power out you alter the way things show quite a lot ,this can become confusing.
The FCV585 has quite a lot of processing going on to clean up shallow water images. Hope this helps

Stewy, I fish the SE of S Australia and the blob on pic 3 has small white specs in it. Not snapper

If you are drifting or anchored snapper should still show as solid blobs. Size may vary but still should show solid.

I have seen and caught whiting over here. They showed as a skinny red line along the bottom but they were all in the mid to late 50cm.

    Cheers, Stu
