You probably caught a moving school, they usually are only found around structure.
The other day when we were drifting for winter whiting we hit a patch of baby squire - must of caught 6 of them in a few minutes on worms. We were in the middle of the bay with no bottom features (I could see) on the sounder, but I stored it as a waypoint anyway.
I was wondering whether squire are territorial and we just happened to drift through their spot, or whether it was more likely a stray school and the location means nothing.
I'm debating whether or not it is worth going back and fishing the spot at dawn to see if any decent fish are around.
Thanks,
Dave

Nothing makes a fish bigger than almost being caught.
