Depends on the area you fishing, Jacks tend to head for structure. so if you fishing in snags something like 12 -15 pound braid is good for pulling them away, they have quite nasty chewers on them so i usually use a very light single strand trace, about 30cm long.

If your just fishing rockwalls, Jacks are superb sports fish and you should try fishing with a 6 - 8 pd with light drag. they're great fun.

I have great success either with live bait, hooked through the nose, or on Prawnstars, either natural or pink/watermelon colour.

Because of their aggresive nature, circle hooks will self set really easily.
Nothing makes a fish bigger than almost being caught.

Ive dropped more jacks on circle hooks than I care to remember.

Im back on Owner Cutting Point in Octopus pattern and they hookup just fine. I think circle hooks rely on getting the bait right down the throat before they hookup, and this doesnt always happen. Many baits are hit in the middle by a jack 'on the turn' as they are already headed back in the direction of their lair when they bite. So a livie with a hook in the jaw may not get down a jacks gullet, same for a strip bait.

Just my opinion, and no offence to swindells, so Id be interested to hear what others think.

I think circle hooks have their place, being they help survival rates by avoiding guthooked fish, but i wont use em unless Im offshore.

    cheers
