    Townsville camping

Family wants to go camping this weekend and I would like somewhere that is not a national park or too crowded around Townsville. ANy recommendations? Was thinking of going either north to some of the creeks or to Burdekin falls dam.

go to the state forest that is 5km past the toomulla turnoff . turn right into a track and follow it down to the beach there are some nice camping sites along the beach .

Stuie - we recently did a touring holiday up that way (and further) and a guy we spoke to at Carmila beach recommended a similar spot at Toomulla. However, the "official" free camp at Toomulla was nothing like Carmila - it was a small, grassed, crowded camping spot not on the beach. I'm thinking now that perhaps he meant the spot you have described!! Sounds good.
We ended up at Rollingston BIG4 van park - which was nice enough but not quite what we were after.

don't know if this is the spot but I wouldn't go in there towing a van and I would want to have a 4wd to go along the beach .but you can get to the beach in a falcon .

    Thanks Stuie,
Will go for a drive and check it out on Tuesday if I get the time. Are there many sandflies there?

    Re: Townsville camping

hey mate have you got a 4wd?

there is a few spots you can go to, next weekend me and a few mates are going camping at a creek called the orient but its a bit of a drive. i recommend insulator if you have a 4wd,its the first turnoff as you go over the crystal creek bridge on the highway, and you simply follow it down and go on the beach and follow it right up to the point.

really nice camping spot with plenty of shady trees and what not.

Thanks Gilli, have a 4wd so might check it out. Anything there, such as toilets, etc or is it purely bush camping, not that it matters just depends on what I pack.

We weren't towing - we would have preffered a 4wd-only spot.

    Re: Townsville camping

    Gilli,
I heard a rumour that the last wet formed a small tidal creek that must be crossed to get to Insulator creek now. I haven't fished there since last December but can you or anyone else for that matter confirm whether or not this is actually now the case?

    Goddy,
If you end up camping near Insulator be wary of crocs especially at night. Plenty about last time I was there, even right up in the shallow feeder creeks as well. As Gilli said, it is a great little camping spot.

    Cheers,
    Roo.

    Re: Townsville camping

Yeah mate it is true that there is a little tidal creek there, nothing more than 10 meters wide, if that and it is bone dry on low tide. thats the only thing with insulator, that you go up n come back on low tide.

Otherwise it is a very lovely spot, right on the beach, got a nice breeze there and within only a few meters of the creek if you take your boat up.

Cattle creek is the next creek around from insulator, although is only accessible by boat, but however, it holds most of steve irwins gators that he released. Dangerous spot but the best fishing spot ive ever been to
