First time in the Brissy River chasing Flattie.

    Hi all,

I'm a regular reader of these forums but don't post much as I have only seriously fished for 2 years so I figure I don't have any good advice to give (yet).
Thanks to these forums I have learnt more than any one person could teach me. I regularly fish Redcliffe, mostly Scarborough reef and Pine but had read a lot about the Brissy river and thought why not head across and check it out?

Headed out from Woodypoint at Redcliffe at around 10.00am. Took about 10- 15 mins to get to the mouth of the river. (5.2m KingFisher, 75hp 4 stroke). Anyway headed in to a couple of spots that people had mentioned on these forums close to the mouth. Watched the
sounder closely and there were some great drop off spots. Second cast landed me a nice 38cm Squire. Had a bit of a look around, mostly sounding out and collecting a few marks when we decided to try the sunken rock wall. Current was running hard so we dropped anchor and threw some baits out. Not much on so we flicked some plastics. I got busted off and as I was checking my jig I could hear some splashing. Look over the boat and my brother in law had hooked an absolute horse. This flat head was well over 80cm and was not happy. I reached for the net but the bastard was to big and not plying the game. I had one eye on the gaff but I knew I had to release the big girl so couldn't kill her. Only wanted a piccy but she smashed against the boat and snapped the line.

Things got a bit quite after that but we didn't care as we got some great new marks and each caught a decent fish plus the monster that got away. We'll be back for "Nessy" on the weekend.

If anyone has got some tips for the brissy river I'd be happy for a PM. It's always an
unknown when you fish a new area and today was a fact finding mission more than anything. Just want to thank everyone on here who makes checking out Moreton Bay much easier with all the excellent posts and sharing of info. Thanks guys.

Oh and I am off to BCF tomorrow to grab a new net as I now owe my brother in-law a monster flattie. He was cool about it but if it had been the other way around I wouldn't have been so nice. Lucky it was my boat I guess.

    Cheers guys

Hey crafty, don't know if you'll be able to get to the places with the bigger boat I seem to do alright but along that pipeline either side on the drift is good on the flatty's with SP's. I prefer the incoming tide, I tend to drift around the boggy creek side of the pipes but also on the other side closer to the river it always seems to deliver with some interesting bycatches. Got about 6 flatty's the other weekend, most under 50 but 2 of them went at 52cm's and 55cm's great table size if I was ever bothered to clean them up ohh the SP's of damage were the 3" minnows in smelt. good luck.

Yeh mate boat might have a few problems and with out the leckie could make it hard to name a few spots but simply try the main wharf area .Rememeber the 30 m restriction and you should still pull a nice variety of fish there. The river is a very underestimated spot with lots of secrets and a lot to explore and I GET MY NEW BOAT NEXT WEEK Sorry mate I'm hanging for a fish and having withdrawls.
