    Airbourne cobia or kingfish

    Hi all,

went out of the seaway yesteday and a mate had what looked like either a cobia or kingfish that leaped outa the water 3 times, got it about 5 metres fr the boat then the 20lb leader snapped this thing was 1 metre long easy and was all over the place tangling lines and all ( I named the mark "Knot Bad" )

He's never been outside before and he and his girlfriend got a snapper ea, just over 400mm, they never had so much fun I got one keeper snap that went back in the water.

any ideas what fish it was ?

i would put money on a cobia. their first run is usually straight to surface followed by a straight to bottom effort. the odd one will muck up the whole time around the surface with twisting jumps.

Custaro, sounds like you discribed, up to the top then down then leaps all while doing star patern turns, it was amazing ! I think it took the tuna slab bait on the way to the bottom,

    thanks

chances are it was neither this last month is mako time on the coast got a couple lately myself they turn it on when hooked, though that's not to say it wasn't a cobe but i'd put my money on a small mako they only average 5 to 10kg this time of year.

    Samson,

Actually that was our very first thought, well a shark of some discription anyway,
Hmm choice of 3 now but still wish we got it in the boat if not only just to see the look on Donna's face before she jumped outa the boat

Sounds very much like the antics of a mako. Though cobes have been mistaken for sharks by many fishos. Makos are usually (though not always) a distinctive blue colour, whereas cobes are more brown. Though in the heat of the battle and with quick jumps that the smaller fish do it can be hard to tell. They both put up awesome fights, and are also great chewing.....makos are my favourites of the shark species on the plate.

Had a cobe jump twice during the fight yesterday. Could be all three but the two mentioned by Greg and Randall are more likely.

my bets on it being a cobia.......seen two old fellas anchored up in a tinnie floating pillies out the back one day get onto a horse of a cobia which seemed to wanna spend more time outta the water than in it! they didn't know which rod to pick up as all of them were going off in a tangled mess, by the time they sorted things out......snap! gone.

was one hell of a show tho

Thanks for the replies guys, we may never know what it was other than the one that got away now, we'll try to get one in the boat next time

I would've replied earlier but the puter needed to be " Pinged " about a week ago ? I thought I was banned or something.
