There is a fine line between fishing and just standing on the shore like an idiot
I wonder how much deeper the ocean would be without sponges

Yeah, I heard about this at lunchtime. It was an old glass half cab... I wonder exactly how it happened.
how big was the boat 1 website saying 5m tinny and another saying it was a 12m half cabin? not good news either way
Geez thats terrible!

saw on TV, conditions where good, hull shape was seaworthy only 5m long or there abouts, trying to read between the lines it looks like they somehow got too close to where the waves shape up near shore as a few rollers where coming through.
cheers fnq
The news said that they had been fishing in that spot for a few hrs when they realized they were to close to the break, so i guess the tide was going out or the swell was picking up or both , anchor drifted or even the wind may have changed direction and they ended up in the break, very very sad ! I agree that it looked like an early sub 5m cruise craft.

Alcohol doesn't agree with me, but i sure do enjoy the argument!!!
Definitely not a 5m tinny or a 12m glass boat.

RIP.
Such a tragedy.
Nothing makes a fish bigger than almost being caught.
I surf that spot quite a bit, it's known as Secrets. If any of you have sounded around out there, you'll notice a longe ridge that runs out in a roughly E/SE direction, for quite a way. The reason we like to surf there is, the swell builds and wedges up as it refracts around the ridge. Long interval groundswells that don't look real big on the beach's, really stand up there. And it's not unusual to be sitting where you think is right out the end of the takeoff zone, only to have a set break another 20 yards out.
Gotta be careful if there's a groundswell out there. It's a good idea to check the EPA wavebouys. If the period is up over 10 seconds, don't be anywhere near it.
Always sad and great to see young blokes getting in and helping
Reminder to us all to stay safe and keep assessing the conditions and our position. I have everyone I invite onboard wearing self inflatables now if nothing else to remind them to keep a safety eye out.
It isn't that hard to get tipped out if you aren't expecting it and these blokes at that age must have had some experience between them.
Very sad
I just found out that that the guy that died was very good friend of mine and the family, his name was Wally Chapman. The wife and I are devastated that such a gentle man can loose his life in such away. His family is in shock as you could imagine. RIP Wally.
