Unhappy Need help with Johnson 130 hp

    Hi all

I am out of ideas with my johnson 130hp its vro equipped 1997 model with 500hrs on it.

I have not used boat for six months , I started it about 3 weeks ago all be it very hard .

so i try to start it today with no luck . it cranks good battery fully charged

I can hear the click on the choke.

I checked for spark by using a old plug against block could not see any spark at cranking speed.

I cant check kill switch as I dont seem to have one.

any ideas ? just about had it with boats allways something goes wrong !

    cheers

OK, lets start right at the beginning, it was running OK last time? have you tried a complete new remote tank, complete with fresh fuel, hose and primer? do the plugs look wet? are they all the same? have you got a compression tester? do the very easy no cost stuff first. I don't think they have made a 130 for quite a while now, so it must be getting on a bit?

hang on, just saw 1997 model. I think you should have kill switch/lanyard, might be your problem. That was around when they were fitted.

It doesnt have the kill switch anywere on the controll unit. attached is a pic of it there is only a sticker on it but no lanyard.

I tried for spark but still nothing on any of the plugs.

did compression test with an even 120 psi on all 4 cylinders.

are there any fuses hidden anywere ?

    thx

Ya have to crank em pretty fast . Charge up the battery , check battery terminals are clean and / jumper up a second one and see what happens along with fresh fuel in a tank.

    Check ignition switch.

Yes there is fuses under the cowl

cormorant, I have two massive 4wd type batteries fully charged motor spinds pretty fast...

looking at brp parts catalogue seems the lanyard attaches to the where the key goes in . the only thing is Ive never seen this lanyard and have operated engine prior to this. so its confusing.

Check the fuse under the cowling 20 amp i think it isolates the motor

What's that cable running out from under the forward reverse lever on the control box. Then theres this little black sticker depicting a kill switch!!!! with cable in On!!! and cable out off !!!!!.

Best sort that out first think thats where your dead spark is from the cable or lanyard has worked out a bit.

Re: Need help with Johnson 130 hp

I know this is repeating from above but i have a 2003 90 hp johnson and the front controller looks exactly the same as mine and i have to use a laynard key to activate the kill switch at key switch itself.so regarding jumpin the starter motor you must have the battery conected and the key switch on to jump start via the starter motor.try this first and if does work that means you have a loose wire (very thin yellow wire) from the controller to where it enters thru the front bottom of the cowling. so at the moment when you turn the key switch do you hear the fuel pump and can you tilt the motor ?
