Not realy........there have always been plenty of people out there who want to pinch your mail......and with contract postal riders who can't be bothered putting the mail in the box properly, regardless of the size of the box or opening.... a P.O. box is a reasonable thing.

A few years ago arround here people were wondering why mail was not arriving......then they found two hole bags of mail floating in one of the dams down the road.

As for sheredding.............when many places consider an electricity or phone bill as some form of identification...........shredding is a very reasonable thing.

    cheers
Its the details, those little details, that make the difference.

How do you label your crabpots?
If they want to know your details there are ways.
If you own your home then council is a good place to start as they have lists of landowners available for inspection or I just run into your car and ask for details like license number, address etc.

    Re: Government publishes your details.

someone involved in electronic fraud is hardly going to harvest identities off crab pots....besides they would have to pull up the pot .....only to get my p.o. box address.

yes there is the land register........ but that only gives a name associated with the street address

    same as the electoral roll.

as for running into my car.......well that is real clever.....because I will want to see a drivers licence.......and that is not a convienient way of harvesting an identity.

something openly published on the internet...........that is exactly the way the phishers work.

But I am more concerned about the implications for government consultation.

your name and details are then published with your views ........this then opens up that for abuse........either from direct abuse by some looney with an opposing view.......or for discrimination for provision of services or employment.

So say I place a submission on a fisheries or marine parks issue......I subsiquently apply for a government job (or a job with any green aligned interviewer).....and they happen to google my name..( which they should do, the whole "Patell" thing would never have happened if they had googled him).........interviewers may decide not to employ me because of my views.

    cheers

as I said..paranoid..who give if someone flogs the mail..less mails arriving.
I don't care if someone sees my electricity bill...totally irrelevant.

    Re: Government publishes your details.

I asked the cook about job interviews and processes involved seeing she does a heap for a largish council and I have not been to a job interview since 1982.
Yes, they Google candidates names to see what the go is.
But if 1 or 2 people are biased to what they see then that's just bad luck because they have selection panels...not just 1 or 2 people who participate in the selection process and make a decision.
They have had to do that because of candidates do sometimes suggest that the interviewer's were biased against them for what-ever reason ie colour, marital status, sexual preference, disability etc...which can open the way for litigation against the organisation and interviewers personally.
And if there are more then 1 or 2 people who do not agree with your views then you have to ask...Do I really want to work here or deal with these people??
The same applies for tenders. They are not decided by one person.

So Oldboot...do you do banking or submit orders, tenders, order stuff online??
If so then I'd be more worried about that compared to the Better Homes and Gardens and rego renewals coming in the mail.
How do you get on with companies that will not send things to PO boxes??

The cook just went to a MicroSoft dodad down the coast last week.
Some of the stuff happening on identity theft on the net is downright scary now...mainly concerning companies (large and small) but if they want to get my $37.53 from my accounts they will as I bank and do financial transactions online, or worse, over the phone.
I intend on living for-ever....so far so good
