    thru hull transducer....aluminium.

    I am contemplating an aluminium thru hull transducer installation... in the hope of getting better high speed performance.

    Has anybody got experience doing thru hull in aluminium.......I have no problem with the method.....I'm more after information about the performance.

    The boat in question is heavier pressed rather than plate.

    In theory it should work will some loss in sensitivity and gain...... but how much.

    and am I going to get the high speed performance I am hopeing for.

    I did it with our budget Lowrance sounder after snapping the transducer off beach launching. It's in a 4.15 pressed tinny. I just cut the bottom out of a small tupperware container and siliconed it to the hull near the rear seat. The transducer sits in some water in the container.

    It works as well as it ever did, but high speed performance is still ordinary, I'm guessing the turbulence is the same as it was in the original location. You really need to hang under the boat while it's planing and look for a calm spot to mount it ;-)

    Hmm well I'm tempted to get out the epoxy and give it a try

    I think I'll price a replacement trany.

    the way to test it is put it in a bag of salt water and sit the bag where you intend to mount it this way you keep moving it alittle at a time till you get the right spot all this needs to be done on the water at speed to test it.

    I know my glass boat transducer is epoxied straight to the bottom of the boat, last trip out drove me nuts where the sounder kept losing track of the bottom ( and the fish) because that little bit of water from spray slopping around was enough to interfere with it. The bilge pump took care of it, but it means rebooting the sounder every time I get water in the bottom of the boat which makes me nervous because its a GPS combo. ( Humminbird 788X) If I could do the job again I would sit it in the tupperware attempting to keep it dry. I think that's what you meant??

    Through hull transponders are not for aluminium hulls have fbeen found to be generally unsuscessful

    So you are talking about a shoot thru not a thru hull set up.

    Thru-hulls work very well with alloy boats if done correctly. Shoot thrus I agree with Culbara

    Try a better quality transducer like the Airmar P66. Thru hull won't work in a tin boat unless you really go thru hull and drill a hole and mount the transducer to the bottom of the boat. I prefer the better quality trannie mount and ensure that it is in clear water.

    I have drilled a hole in my tinnie and fixed a Airmar transducer matched up with a FCV 620. I get a perfect reading in any conditions or speed that is unless the boat is airbourne . But seriously I was a bit wary at first about drilling the hole in the boat but it doesn't leak one bit. Highly recommend it.

    try the existing transom mount transducer on a bed of silicon just dont get air between, and if its no good just scrape it off. worked well in my glass boat and has been done in tinnies. put it right at the back in the middle if possible

    Probably means that the transducer/hull bond is broken and the water sloshing around fills the gap occasionally and allows the signal to get thru.

    'yeh, I recon once I have a few other things sorted...I'll give it a go......itsall loomed up under the gunwals at the moment and getting it out means a re-tie

    from an acoustic point of view there isn't too much difference between thin glass and thin ally.

    I do think there may be advantages to making sure the trany is in the middle of a span in the sheet.........I even toyed with the idea that coupling may improve......but perhaps at 200Khz that is a bit hopefull.

    Mate I just fitted my new tinnie with an Airmar P66 transom mount. On this particular boat I have nothing to compare it to but from prevuious experience I am more then satisfied with the performance and signal. Ran all day no matter what speed (am running in motor) and signal all the time. I would recommend this set up and save yourself the drama of cutting a hole in your boat.

    I have run several transducers straight through pressed alloy hulls the thin layer of alloy knocks deepwater performance but for most use it kills any transome mounting option

    I haven't tried this yet, but ....

    Mate who is a bit of an electronics tragic suggests that I should move my transom mount transducer into boat. His method: cut a piece of 90mm pvc to suit transducer size. Sikaflex it to flat part of boat bottom. When sika is cured, mount transducer inside using some ordinary silicon to hold in place. Fill with vegetable (cooking) oil to just short of top. Cut circular plastic piece from say an icecream container to fit into pipe. Allow slot in pipe for transducer lead. Seal on top of plastic with sikaflex. He swears it works.
