The East Coast

Hey guys,

In a few weeks time i will be leaving from Melbourne to go on a one month fishing trip along the east coast in an RV. Some of the spots we are stopping at so far are Maroochydoore, Hervey Bay, Port Macquarie, and Airley Beach to name a few.

Just wandering if any of you guys have some suggestion on some places that are a must to stop for keen anglers along the east coast. We will be doing some boating, but i'm really keen to find some spots that dont require that (piers, surf, shore etc.).

Would love to find some good surf fishing spots as i have just bought a new surf rod. haha

We are a fairly young bunch of guys (22-24yrs old) and have never really fished the east coast above NSW before so any suggestion would be greatly appreciated.

geees, there must be a million spots to fish in that distance, I guess the best advice is to adapt to what is around when you are there, like some places are very seasonal, so no use fishing for certain things at certain locations, to use a scattergun approach will probably see you go empty handed on almost every trip, like here in the Illawarra, we will be getting completely different species from the lakes and rivers and beaches that we were 2 months ago, it will be the same everywhere, stop at a small local tackle store and ask them whats going on at present, most will be honest and steer you the right way, to just turn up at lunch time with a packet of frozen prawns and a handfull of department store tackle will usualy see you sadly dissappointed most times.

You could start anywhere.

Surf and rock fishing.
Start at Evans Head. Then Ballina, Lennox, Brunswick. Then the best bits. The back beaches of the Tweed. Pottsville, Hastings,Cabarita,Kingscliffe and Fingal.

Mostly a case of " turn right and go till you hit the water".

make sure you stop at South West Rocks (just north from Port Macquarie). We have fished there off the rocks in front of the caravan park for some unbelievable fish - mackerel etc

Which was great cause we were sick of the bread and butter, bream, flatties etc.

Also there is a long rock wall all the way along the river from Jerseyville bridge(you will go over it heading in from the pacific highway) and have caught many jewies up there!!! Stop at the tackle shop and you will see the deep bend on the map.

Thats my 2 bobs worth for a bit of action other than bream, flatties off the bank.

Most of the north coast headlands and deep beach gutters will have big greenback tailor on them at this time of year. You'll also get plenty of bream in teh same areas. my best advice is to ask around, most fisho's are more than willing to pass on their knowledge or offer tag alongs.

If you've got the dollars to go on a fishing charter i cannot recommend highly enough the operation that Stan Young runs out of Wooli. i have been out with him a dozen or more times and we always catch and esky full of snapper, kings and various other denizens of the deep.

our best morning was in October 2007 when we had 80 snapper (bagged out) by 10am then went wide and caught sambo's, kings and amberjacks on livies and jigs.

he' runs a half day composite charter every Monday, or he can sometimes line you up for full day composite charters. his number is 02 66497100.

Are there any good spots to get GT's off the shore/rocks/piers? They would be number 1 on my "need to catch" list.

9 days till we leave.. so pumped!!
