Question How to change Mercury Trim Motor

2002 Mercury 75HP 2 wire trim motor .If the leg was fully up and propped, can i then drain and remove the trim motor without using the manual release,Just by undoing the motor retainer bolts then replace motor and fill with fluid, and not have to bleed the system, Thanks Col.......

Thanks Garry, I looked at the 2nd hand trim motor (out of the states)and assumed most of it, although i looked at a manual, but it was complete rebuild not just motor change, so to me it only seemed like a reservoir, They are very expensive new, mine is still working , but i don't know how, as the motor casing is encrusted in the most extreme rust, i have ever seen on something that still works, I will post photos, before and after removal, Thanks Again Garry

I have a 2003 75 hp Merc and have exactly the same issue. The pump casing has rusted an amazing amount and flakes of rust periodically fall off. On the weekend I stripped the pump, pulled the casing off and gave it a thorough clean with a wire brush. It was then primed and painted so hopefully will not rust in the future. Several other parts are showing similar corrosion.

Very dissapointed with the durability and corrosion resistance!

Interestingly the casing is only a hollow tube with two large magnets attached inside. Could anybody tell me if you could replace the tube with stainless and then attached the magents? Even if the tube needed to be machined to match dimensions, it would have to be cheaper than buying a new one.

Hmmm... depending on how it is all arranged the "iron" tube housing may form part of the magnetic circuit......then perhaps not.......are you feeling lucky

I good scrub... etch prime and good quality paint....should see it more durable than the gold zink plate they come with.......chase that with a squirt of lanolin after every wash down...... you'll probaly see the motor out.

    cheers
Its the details, those little details, that make the difference.
