When to crab?

the title says it What do you look for when going crabbing ? Temp change, rain , tide types, moon phase, where do you place your pots etc.

Im in central qld so is it different to other areas?

Your help can only improve my catch. Thanks

For crabbing the ideal is a run in tide, about 9 - 9.30 am, bigger tide the better, but, you can work the runout on the same sort of tide, on the water pots/dillies down at daylight.

New and full moon periods.

Work your pots/dillies ( soon to be banned ) in gutters or drop offs from banks/reef areas.

I start down here in October, may be a little different up there.

Whole mullet cut in half or whiting frames will do it.

In bris for muddies, I work the turn of the bigger tides. Not to big, otherwise you need to put bricks in your pots to stop them washing away. If you are fishing the little creeks that run into the main creek then always put your pots upstream of the run of the tide. I find that the crabs seem to go nuts when the is a heavy downpour of rain. To much rain seems to send them into hiding. Heavy rains try the deeper holes or the mouths of bigger creeks.

I reckon the bigger tides are better for muddies. I usually target the channels with gutters /drains that drain big areas of mangroves and work my pots right up the gutters as far as I can as the tide comes in. I leave them there overnight and check them on the next big tide.
Early in the summer when the crabs are coming in I run them along the main channels and check them every 1/2 hour or so moving them up or down the main channel depending on which end i 'm finding crabs. On low tide i try to keep an eye open for where the crabs have been digging /scratching and place my pots around these areas.

I found with Muddies that A nice high tide coming through our creek, got some nice big bucks in the pots..Blueys you can get low tide, if raking, in the boat throwing a net down, didn't really matter, we still got a couple of blueys a few weeks ago, on the end of our fishing lines..

thanks for the food for thought, anymore outthere? the only sand crabs ive had up here have been chomped by muddies in the same pot so we don,t really chase them i,ve even been crabbing with a bloke that threw them back as unwanted buy catch. I took the ones caught that trip.
