Which way up for spinning rod reel seat?

As the title suggests which way do you all prefer to put your reel seats on a spinning rod, lock nut towards the tip or butt?

I am having the delema at the moment and can't decide.

Lock nut towards the tip; if you hold the rod just in front of the reel to fight a fish or work a plastic you are holding the thread not the foregrip.

Lock nut towards the butt; fighting the fish you hold the foregrip but casting or just waiting for a bite you are holding the thread.

Please people enlighten me with your rod buiding brilliance .

    Thanks
    Adam

Re: Which way up for spinning rod reel seat?

I work out the most comfortable length for the butt of the rod and trun the reel mount to give the best option.

I find spinning rods are much more critical for the right butt length than baitcasters are.

Re: Which way up for spinning rod reel seat?

I like lock nut to the butt,so when I hold the rod thumb and first finger sit nicely on the hood and grip. The reel leg sits between the middle of my four fingers. Actually my hands are never on the thread at any stage.

Both valid points, I'm leaning to the thread towards the butt also. Thanks.

This is the first one that is being built for a mate so I'm quite nervous about making a mistake. I'll never here the end of it if I stuff it up!!!!

Re: Which way up for spinning rod reel seat?

If it's for working lures, I'd put the locknut to the front so the thread isn't under your palm if you hold the rod with your forefinger around the reel stem.
If you have the reel that's going on it you can also trim the thread to reduce the amount that sticks out of the locknut.
If it's usually going to be used for fighting by the foregrip, then I put the locknut to the back.
Either way you need to set the length of both rear and forgrip to suit his style, so you should really have him there to play with some different positions before you go on.
    Cheers,
    Owen

Re: Which way up for spinning rod reel seat?

I am a big fan of Egrell Rodz (spin) for big lures/plastics for impoundment barra and smaller plastics for bay fishing. Both my S10 and my S2 have the lock nut on the tip side of the rod and cork grip all the way from the butt to the reel seat. Works beautifully this way...

Re: Which way up for spinning rod reel seat?

Thanks Owen, My mate came and had a play with a few scenarios and we decided on the thread towards the butt. Rod will be used for off shore SP so really grab the front grip while fighting a fish up.

Peter4, I also like the Egrell setup with part of the reel seat in the cork handle but that workmanship is a bit advanced for me yet, this is my first attempt using cork but don't worry I may have a crack at it next!!

Re: Which way up for spinning rod reel seat?

this discussion has been part of rod building theory and practice in the 40 years I have been doing it, and im sure well before I started. There is no right or wrong answer. It is a personal preference thing when it comes to custom rod building. If someone is experienced and knowledgable enough to commission a custom rod, then they will have reasons for their preference. If they dont have a preference, I always go thread down, as you can almost guarantee they will be holding the rod in front of the reel. My personal preference is for thread up....as I find it uncomfortable to have the thread and lock nuts on my palm.

Good points Greg, I am learning more and more on each build and see the benefit of the future owner to have what is most comfortable for them, hence custom rod.

Re: Which way up for spinning rod reel seat?

I couldn't help myself Myles, put one on one of my earlier rods but haven't epoxyed it yet, they came out great. My mate will be happy with what he is given . Once again thanks for the help you get so much more from just talking to people.

    decal pic is attached.

Oh and I got it on first try , beginners luck .

When your ready for the seat in the cork job just come around and chuck the cork in the lathe Adam.
Easy as pie to shape and fit with the right gear.
I intend on living for-ever....so far so good
